Europe’s leading city break destination revealed (and it’s not London, Paris or Rome)

The winners of the World Travel Awards for 2015 have been announced.

Geneva has been named as Europe’s leading destination for a city break.

The Swiss city pipped all others to the post, proving to be more desirable than the romantic streets of Paris, the gondola rides of Venice, the Egyptian obelisks of Istanbul and even bustling London.

Voted for by thousands of people online, the city has won the title for the second year running, for its unbeatable tourist attractions and impeccable services.

Geneva is an ideal location for photographers who wish to capture reflections off the beautiful Lake Geneva or look in awe at Mont Blanc's summit, couples in search of a romantic fondue dinner and other culinary delights, and solo travellers with a bohemian edge who can head to Carouge for a spot of shopping.

The awards also named Europe’s leading airline, which was awarded to Lufthansa for the fifth consecutive year.

The Algarve, Portugal, grabbed the accolade of Europe’s best beach destination. The sunny Mediterranean region is renowned for its beautiful beaches and sandy coves, with an unbeatable selection of hotels and restaurants.

Winner of Europe’s Leading Hotel & Spa was the Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa in Spain. The hotel’s breath-taking mountain and sea views and rooms vary from plush to elaborate, with hot tubs and large telescopes on terraces, and there are two swimming pools.
