Life in an Italian treehouse

Treehouses and boutique breaks are rarely mentioned in the same sentence. But aerial living is the latest cool, quirky weekend break.

And tree houses don’t come much more lavish than The Suite on the Oak, nestled on the organic La Piantata agriturismo (a farm with tourist accommodation), in the lavender hills of Lazio, Italy (one hour away from Rome). Perched eight metres off the ground on a century-old oak tree, The Suite on the Oak comes equipped with a four-poster bed, enticing en suite and MP3 players - while breakfast is hauled up via a pulley.

WHY IT'S HOT:

La Piantata takes canopy living to an unbearably sumptuous extreme. After clambering up the winding staircase – where you’re welcomed with a plaque bearing your name – just pop open the champagne awaiting in the minibar and soak up the views from your private furnished terrace.

Should you feel the need to descend to terra firma, you can enjoy a massage (€ 50), horseride or laze around the swimming pool (which, luxury-break fans take note, comes with its own underwater chaise longue), all on site.

EATING AND DRINKING:

All guests are treated to the hoist-it-up-yourself Italian breakfast (think organic marmalades, lavender honey and zabaglione). Elsewhere, try Trattoria Torre di Lavello or La Mirandolina with its covered outdoor courtyard – both a short hop away in the car.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY:

The Vespa-madness of Rome is only one hour away, while Mediterranean beaches lie 30 km from the farmhouse. You can also explore nearby Tuscan towns and villages, or loaf around your treehouse terrace, sipping limoncello and watching yet another spectacular sunset.

The Suite on the Oak costs €330 (£284) per night, (including breakfast). To reach La Piantata, fly Easyjet from Gatwick to Rome Fiumicino from £50 return.
