Grab your flip-flops: these are the world’s most and least expensive beaches of 2017

Varkala Beach.jpg

We all love a palm tree-fringed beach fantasy of powdery white sands and glistening azure sea.

Yet, some of the world’s most treasured coastal stretches are dramatically more expensive than others.

TravelBird’s annual beach report is out today, highlighting the gaping difference between wallet-friendly shores, and those that will make your debit card wince in anticipation.

The Amsterdam-based travel experts looked at prices of five essential items – sunscreen, water, beer, ice-cream and lunch for one – at 310 beaches across the globe.

Benaulim Beach

Benaulim Beach in Goa, where a bottle of water costs 24p

While we tend to think the odd gelato here and there won’t make much difference, the new figures indicate a striking contrast in prices, depending on your destination.

The world’s cheapest beach, Cua Dai in Vietnam, costs a total of £10.93 for a day's worth of typical purchases. This is almost five times cheaper than the most expensive beach of 2017, a dubious honour which goes Kristiansand beach in Vest-Agder, Norway. Here, the sum total of everyday beach costs will set you back a teeth-grating £51.03.

In Anse Georgette in the Seychelles, beach-goers are obliged to shell out £21 for sunscreen, compared to £3 in Kerala’s Varkala Beach. An ice-cold beer in Sharm El-Naga Bay costs a mere £1.55 compared to £5.91 in Tahiti’s La Plage de Maui.

Norway and French Polynesia locations dominate in the world’s most expensive beaches, while Vietnam, India and Egypt hot spots sweep the board when it comes to affordability.

Scroll down for the illuminating breakdown of figures, below, and raise a toast to sun-soaked slices of paradise that don’t cost the earth...
