"He was an ordinary-looking middle-aged man" Women are being harassed on the Tube by stranger handing out 'fat shaming' cards

A tragic no-mark is making pathetic attempts to belittle women travelling alone in London by handing out “fat-shaming” cards on the underground.

Kara Florish, 30, from Southend-on-Sea, tweeted a picture of the misspelled leaflet titled "Overweight Haters Ltd" that was given to her on the Tube at Warren Street on Saturday morning by an "ordinary-looking middle-aged man" who then scarpered.

Another woman was handed one on the tube at Oxford Circus this morning.

The bizarre message on it reads:

“Our organisation hates and resents fat people. We object to the enormous amount of food resources you consume while half the world starves.

“We disapprove of your wasting NHS money to treat your selfish greed. And we do not understand why you fail to grasp that by eating less you will be better off, slimmer, happy and find a partner who is not a perverted chubby-lover, or even find a partner at all.

“We also object that the beatiful [sic] pig is used as an insult. You are not a pig. You are a fat, ugly human.”

Time to get out more? The leaflet being handed to women travelling alone on the tube

Describing the leaflet as “cowardly and hateful,” Kara, who works for the NHS, says that while she is herself is not upset, it could be damaging to anyone “struggling with confidence and eating disorders.”

She tells Stylist.co.uk that she was on her way to meet her family at Euston, before heading to Birmingham's Christmas market, when she was approached.

“We had just pulled into Warren Street station when the man walked to get off the train and put the card on my lap before he got off,” she says. “Unfortunately I didn't see him, but did notice that he was ordinary looking, a middle-aged man in normal clothes.

“When I first read the card I thought it was some sort of joke and just put it down on the seat next to me, but when I thought about it a bit more I decided to do something about it, which is why I posted it on Facebook and asked people to share it.”

Kara says that as a part-time musician she is often in an environment where her looks are commented on, “but nothing like this.”

“I'm a size 12/14, always been what people call curvy, but I don't consider myself fat,” she says. “I'm active and go to the gym at least twice a week, don't smoke, hardly drink and don't do drugs. I have no health issues (that I know of) and have never been seriously ill or in hospital (touch wood) so don't consider myself 'a drain on the NHS'. In fact I'm currently employed by them.

“I work for a mental health organisation so am aware of how detrimental something like this can be to the wrong person. I hope they shut down all these negative websites, as they are encouraging antisocial and hateful behaviour and it is bullying.”

The website linked to the group/single man - which we're choosing not to link to - is filled with depressing messages of support from anonymous trolls who spend far too much time on Reddit boards trying to feel better about themselves.

Last year it was a creepy Women Who Eat On Tubes Facebook group that abused the relatively solitary nature of the tube to target women by secretly taking photos of them as they eat.

TFL's Steve Burton, Director of Enforcement and On-Street Operations, said: “All of our customers have the right to travel with confidence, and this sad and unpleasant form of anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. If anyone is ever made to feel uncomfortable while travelling they should immediately report it to station staff or a police officer.”

British Transport Police says it is looking into the incidents and asks that anyone who is given a leaflet report it to them.

A spokesman for BTP said: “We are aware of the leaflets being handed out on London Underground and would urge anyone who has received one to contact us on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016 with details.”
