The event itself might have been mired in the controversy of the sexist double standard on display in the halftime performance – Adam Levine showcased his two nipples without a whisper of censure, but in 2004 when Janet Jackson had one of her breasts exposed she was blacklisted from the music industry – but the new Captain Marvel trailer quietly reinforced the power of women.

“Time to show these boys how we do it. You ready?” Maria Lambeau (Lashanna Lynch), Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) fighter pilot bestie, says as the pair stalk towards their jets.

“Higher, further, faster baby,” Carol responds, grinning.
