Commitment-phobes, look away now: there's a new tattoo trend sweeping Instagram, and it's not for the fainthearted.

Hot on the heels of minimalist tattoos, coloured inkings and delicate finger art, blackout ink tattoos are the new design de rigueur. Consisting of whole blocks of black ink, the tattoos are used to cover existing designs or simply make a bold statement.

Singapore-based artist Chester Lee, who has been specialising in blackout ink designs for over five years, even has clients who want to cover a whole block of their bodies with black ink.

And it can be both a time consuming, and costly, process: he told Cosmopolitan that the below piece took approximately 20 hours, spread out over a couple of months, to complete.

There are now over 3,000 photos of blackout ink tattoos tagged on Instagram, using the hashtags #blackouttattoo or #blackouttattoocollective.

One user shared an image of a blackout tattoo with the comment, "I'm deciding to blackout most [of] the tattoos on my left arm, cheaper than laser tattoo removal". And Lee, who shared an image of one of the blackout inkings as he was working on it, described it as a "freaking cool black arm".

You can take a look at some of the biggest and boldest designs below.
