In this week's Stylist we encouraged taking a beauty risk - ditching the shackles of your signature hair and make-up and plumping for something altogether more brave. A recent survey revealed that that a quarter of women admitted they wished they could chop their hair off to make a statement but either lacked the confidence or didn't have the time. If you need some inspiration, these celebrity reinventions should help you take the plunge.

  • Madonna

The queen of reinvention, Madonna’s ever-evolving image has seen her morph from bushy-browed, bleach-blonde haired 80’s icon to Marilyn Monroe-inspired bombshell. A brunette spell during the 90s transformed her from spiritual earth-mother to androgynous goth. The most recent, and natural-looking reincarnation, born out of her disco era, is fit, healthy and gorgeously groomed.

  • Emma Watson

Last year, Emma’s dramatic post-Harry Potter elfin cut was the talk of the beauty world. Firmly closing the Hermione chapter of her life whilst placing both her and the cut in vogue, the radical transformation took her from girl to woman in one snip of the scissors.

  • Rihanna

Over the past couple of year’s Rihanna’s style has evolved from fresh-faced, long-haired teenage star to edgy, rock chick. Never one to forego a trend, Rihanna pulls of dramatic, experimental styles in both hair and make up.

  • Nicola Roberts

Since abandoning the fake tan in favour of her porcelain-pale complexion, Nicola Roberts’ solo career has gone from strength to strength. Not only is she, and her pared-back look, now highly-favoured by fashion designers - appearing front row at the fashion shows - last year also saw the successful launch of her Dainty Doll make-up line aimed at pale skin-tones.

  • Linda Evangelista

Ever-changing hair colours, cuts and styles duly earned Linda Evangelista the nickname, The Chameleon. Looking fabulous in every style she sports – from blunt bangs to elfin crops and every colour and shade of the rainbow – it is Linda’s easily-changeable ever-flattering style that makes her one of the most sought-after supermodels.

  • Drew Barrymore

A life in the limelight that began at the tender age of 5, Barrymore has always been the first to take a beauty risk. Notorious in the grunge-soaked 90s for her platinum blonde hair, fascination with daisies and her penchant for de-robing, our favourite Charlie’s Angel has come a long way since. She had one of the hottest hairstyles of 2010, getting the ombre, dip-dyed hair colour bang on.

  • Agyness Deyn

A modern-day model and muse, Agyness Deyn’s style changes not in line with beauty trends, but in line with her own independent thoughts and musings. The only British model to successfully sport a skinhead as well as being made over to look like HRH the Queen, Aggy is a true individual and seldom shies away from a beauty risk.

  • Katie Holmes

From her girl-next-door roots as Joey Potter in Dawson's Creek, to her sleek newlywed phase as Mrs Tom Cruise with a chic cropped 'do to match, Katie Homes is no stranger to reinvention. Her latest look, complete with tumbling waves and polished make-up, strikes us as very similar to one Miss Middleton.

  • Lady GaGa

Taking experimentation to the extreme, Lady Gaga shows no fear when it comes to beauty – she’s covered herself in meat, pulled off a full-head of grey hair and worn every type of blonde wig imaginable – all in the name of her art.

  • Kelly Osborne

Proof that when it comes to beauty, au natural is often the best, Kelly has gone back to her roots and looks amazing for it. An experimental few years has taken her from cropped, jet black hair to purple-grey and back to blonde. And with a killer new body to match, our favourite MTV brat has never looked so good – and she’s stayed true to herself the whole way through.
