Stylist’s associate editor (beauty) Joanna McGarry reveals her – and our – commitment to representing every Stylist reader
The enduring issue of representing diversity in the beauty world isn’t just about foundation shades and models on billboards. As a magazine that reaches 400,303 women every week, we understand we too have a responsibility in addressing inequalities in the industry.
Since launching in October 2009, we’ve tried to ensure the pages of Stylist are visually diverse – both in terms of the age and race of the women we feature – but we know there is more we can do, because you’ve told us. You’ve emailed and tweeted, and we are listening.
Which is why we now have a diversity manifesto for our fashion and beauty pages:
- We will try harder to honour our commitment to you by making Stylist magazine a diverse and inclusive destination for fashion, beauty and beyond.
- We will work alongside model agencies to ensure the faces that appear within our pages fully reflect those of our readers.
- We will make sure every piece of beauty editorial we feature is relevant to women of all skintones and hair types.
- We will ensure the beauty products we champion are designed to be used on a wide spectrum of ethnicities.
Please let us know how we can do this better, by emailing faceofbeauty@stylist.co.uk or tweet us using the hashtag #faceofbeauty.
