The 2019 Emmys red carpet was awash with gorgeous beauty looks - and for this year’s awards ceremony, Jameela Jamil decided to do her own make-up. Here’s why.
Jameela Jamil has made massive waves across the entertainment industry. The recent Stylist guest editor has long been vocal about the dangerous weight loss products promoted on Instagram, which the social media company has now banned. She uses her platform to openly discuss how the toxic diet industry affected her relationship with her own body. And she often speaks out about narrow beauty standards and looking after your mental health.
At last night’s 2019 Emmy awards, Jamil made a statement with her beauty look.
The activist’s make-up was inspired by gender equality on the set of Netflix hit The Good Place (in which Jamil stars). Speaking to E! News correspondent Zanna Roberts Rassi, Jamil said she noticed a big difference between start times for men and women: “I said halfway through season one, I realised the girls were getting in like 4:45 or 4:30 in the morning and we had an hour and 45 minutes in hair and makeup,” she explained. Meanwhile, men had a much later call time.
So, Jamil took matters into her own hands and cut down her time in the make-up chair significantly. “I was like, ‘how ugly do you think I am? I need half an hour in hair and make-up. I’ll do my own make-up,’” she explained, “I got the same amount of time in hair and make-up as the boys.”
Jamil brought this empowering approach to her Emmys beauty look. Getting ready for the red carpet can leave celebrities sitting in the make-up chair for an entire day, but Jamil avoided that. When Rassi asked if she brought this DIY approach to make-up to the Emmys red carpet, Jamil responded, “I did do my own today! I always do my own!”
As for the make-up itself, Jamil wore a refreshing neon orange hue on her lips, that looked incredible in contrast to her sea foam Monique Lhuillier dress. To match her vibrant lipstick, Jamil’s nails were painted in the same colour. Matching make-up and nails is a trend that we’re bound to see more of over the next year. Models at House of Holland’s SS20 show were given glitter eyes and nails, while Yuhan Wang Fashion East paired a French manicure with white and pink-hued eyes.
We can definitely get on board with more matchy, matchy beauty.
