No skincare regime would be complete without the humble cleanser, one of the most essential items in your beauty kit.
Used both in the morning and at night, a good cleanser will keep your skin clear, fresh and glowing. Most importantly, this nifty product acts to sweep impurities away from the skin, which would otherwise act as a barrier to any other products we use on it.
The team at stylist.co.uk has been busy testing out some recent launches - read on to discover our pick of the five best and most innovative cleansers.
The cult classic cleanser
What: Liz Earle 20th Anniversary Cleanse and Polish Beauty Trio
In summary: New fragrant twists on an award-winning cleanser
Good for: Normal skin
Why it’s making headlines: To celebrate 20 years in the beauty business, Liz Earle has released its cult cleanse and polish cleanser in three new limited edition scents. The indulgent, thick cream has been a cleansing staple of British women for years and is now available in three new, limited edition scents - calming rose and lavender, zesty grapefruit and patchouli and soothing orange flower and chamomile.
Our verdict: Maggie Hitchins, editor of stylist.co.uk, says, "While some might argue ‘if it’s not broke then don’t fix it’, I quite disagree when it comes to this new take on a much loved classic. Part of a trio of newly released scents, I tried the rose and lavender and loved the sweet scent which gave the much loved Cleanse and Polish an extra shot of indulgence and, as ever, did the trick when removing make-up, dirt and the polluting effect of a day in London from my skin."

The deep cleansing oil
What: Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Oil
In summary: A lightweight oil for removing stubborn long-wear makeup
Good for: Normal to dry skin
Why it’s making headlines: Long-wear makeup, such as foundation or waterproof mascara, can be tricky to remove at the end of the day. This new lightweight oil will remove all traces of makeup without the need for heavy scrubbing, which can be damaging to the skin (particularly the delicate area around the eyes). The oil also includes triethylhexanoin, an ingredient derived from the Castor Bean Plant, to leave your skin feeling silky soft.
Our verdict: Anna Brech, deputy editor of stylist.co.uk, says, "It was a nice, smooth way to get rid of make-up – much better than face wipes! – and my skin does feel a bit softer and firmer."
Price: £22, clinique.co.uk
The gentle foaming cleanser
What: Kiehl's Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Wash
In summary: A deep cleansing treatment that won't strip moisture from the skin
Good for: Normal to oily skin
Why it’s making headlines: This new formula from Kiehl's promises a deep cleanse that won't dry out the skin. The emphasis is on protecting the skin's natural barrier, which can often get stripped by harsh soap-based cleansers, while also washing away the day's impurities. The formula is a gel that reacts with water to create a foam so soft that it is even suitable for sensitive skin.
Our verdict: Elinor Block, senior writer for stylist.co.uk, says, “I’m pretty strict with my cleansing routine and I like to feel that my face is properly clean. This one from Kiehl’s lathered up brilliantly, with great control from the pump so I didn’t over soap, and left my skin feeling fresh. I did need moisturiser fairly quickly after but it wasn’t left tight or devoid of any moisture.”

The Medicinal Cleanser
What: Erborian Herbal Energy Cleanser
In summary: A cleanser formulated with a unique complex of Korean medicinal herbs
Good for: All skin types
Why it’s making headlines: This clever cleanser harnesses the power of Korean medicinal herbs to give your skin a deep and invigorating cleanse. It contains six year old Korean ginseng, gingko biloba and ginger, which effectively remove all impurities and toxins from the skin.
Our verdict: Sarah Biddlecombe, junior writer for stylist.co.uk, says, "I was sceptical at first that this medicinal cleanser might sting my sensitive skin, but it had the opposite effect; just one sweep of the cleanser on a cotton pad left my skin feeling smooth, soft and incredibly clean. It also smells incredible."

The deep working cleansing gel
What: Dolce and Gabbana Essential Cleansing Gel
In summary: A gentle gel formula to remove skin impurities
Good for: Normal to oily skin
Why it’s making headlines: Dolce and Gabbana developed their skincare line with the sensible motto of "Purify, Perfect and Protect" and this new cleansing gel does just that. Formulated with the brand's exclusive Gold Flavo Silk Tri-Complex, which visibly improves the skin's appearance, the gel reacts with water to create a gentle foam that will instantly dissolve any traces of makeup and dirt from the skin.
Our verdict: Sejal Kapadia, writer for stylist.co.uk, says, "This cleansing gel formed a really lovely lather that was very creamy. It really cleaned almost two days of make-up without involving much scrubbing or time."
