Dame Helen Mirren has long been our favourite dispenser of straight talking, no-nonsense advice.
In the past, the 72-year-old has shared her sage words of wisdom for boosting our career, beating the sexist “dinosaurs” and, ultimately, leading our best lives, often with more than a few swear words thrown in for good measure.
And now the award-winning actress has turned her attention to our beauty regimes, to share her thoughts on that most-beloved of products: moisturiser.
“I’m an eternal optimist,” she said.
“I know that when I put my moisturiser on it probably does f**k all… but it just makes me feel better.”
Mirren made the comments while speaking to Campaign magazine in Cannes, where she was appearing as an ambassador for L’Oreal.
“I’m not setting standards for others,” The Telegraph reported that she said during the talk.
“All I can do is be who I am. I’ve always loved make-up.”
Mirren, who is the face of L’Oreal’s ‘Age Perfect’ moisturiser range and the oldest celebrity ambassador for the brand, added that she only works with the brand in a capacity that makes her feel comfortable.
“I’ve always said to L’Oreal as well that I will only do what makes me feel better,” she said.
She also spoke about the need for brands to represent a more diverse range of women in their ads, especially when it comes to older women.
“It used to drive me crazy that the ads promoting skin products were using pictures of 15- and 16-year-old girls,” she said.
“As a 30-year-old, I used to look at that and think, what the f**k are you talking about? It was ridiculous. P***ed me off majorly.
“Advertisers are only just coming out of that, and it’s taken them a long time,” she added.
Dame Mirren, we couldn’t agree more.
