How Meghan Markle helped reignite a teen beauty craze

Meghan Markle’s wedding day lip gloss look has seen one of the biggest uptakes on Pinterest.

It comes as little surprise that Meghan’s bridal hair and make-up coincided with current wedding beauty trends, not least her artfully dishevelled bun - with Pinterest saves for ‘messy up-dos’ up by a whopping 1247%.

But it’s the fixation with her pared back wedding day make-up which really caught our attention, subsequently bringing back a beauty craze we thought we’d left behind in Year 9. We’re talking about lip gloss, and the stunning subtle nude version Meghan wore has coincided with a 459% spike in ‘lip gloss’ saves, and a 343% global increase in those for ‘barely there shine’ on Pinterest.

But forget the sticky, gloopy formulations you used to wear whilst lovingly scribbling ‘Leo 4 Eva’ on your Geography folder. Today’s glosses are far more sophisticated and comfortable to wear, whether you’re after a subtle sheen or a more dramatic, sparkly pigment. With that in mind, we’ve hand-picked five that even Cher from Clueless would approve of.

Dior Lip Glow

Apparently the one used by Meghan’s wedding make-up artist (and Dior Ambassador) Daniel Martin. ‘001 Pink’ is the ideal, universal shade to deliver a pretty touch of polish for a ‘your lips but better’ effect.

£26, Dior

Lime Crime Wet Cherry Lip Gloss Naked Cherry

Creating the kind of lacquered finish to mimic a maraschino cherry, this new formula from Lime Crime is not for the faint hearted. With a lightweight texture, the neutral ‘Naked Cherry’ shade is probably the most wearable of the lot.

Fenty Beauty Summer Nights Iridescent Lip Luminizer Trio

With a name inspired by our favourite Grease number, Ms Fenty’s new limited-edition lip gloss trio is anything but greasy. Infused with a pearlescent shimmer, these three pigment-packed, holographic hues - ‘Snake Skin’, ‘Mermaid Thighs’ and ‘Vaycray’ - are giving us all the carnival vibes.

£24, Harvey Nichols

Bourjois Rose Exclusif Lipgloss Self-Adjusting Pink

For a high street beauty brand, Bourjois keep hitting it out of the ball park in terms of failsafe, reliable formulas and oh-so-flattering colours. This clever adaptive gloss is no exception, reacting to the individual pH balance of the wearer’s lips to create a customised shade.

£2.99 Superdrug

MAC Dazzleglass

If you want a lip gloss to take you on a sparkly nostalgia trip, you could do a lot worse than this creation from MAC. The formula is infused with the tiniest light-reflecting particles that are worlds away from the girly glitter you sported back in secondary school. We love the pale pink ‘Baby Sparks’ shade, with beguiling undertones of violet pearl.
