If your matte lipstick is lacking in dimension, you need a lip topper. Here are seven of the very best.

The days of using just one lip product are long gone. A perfect pout isn’t limited to one shade or texture; instead, we’re teaming our trusty lipsticks with Instagram’s newest beauty obsession – lip toppers.

Sparkly and glossy in equal measure, even Huda Kattan, founder of Huda Beauty and liquid lipstick connoisseur is a fan.

“A lip topper is a glittery or iridescent gloss that can be worn on top of matte shades to enhance lips, making them look plumper and more dimensional,” she says. “People want to embrace whatever lip colour they want and really express their personal taste.

“With a lip topper, you can customise your look depending how you choose to wear it. They take your make-up routine to the next level.”

So, how should you apply a lip topper?

Wait for lipstick to dry before adding a layer of lip topper – that’ll help to avoid smudging. When it comes to the corners of your mouth and the edges of lips use a fine-tipped lip brush for a pin-point application.

Huda’s method? “I love to blot my lips with a tissue to remove excess gloss and keep only the shimmer - it’s such as gorgeous matte-yet-glossy look,” she explains.

If your lips are prone to dryness and chapping, prep them with something like E.L.F’s Lip Scrub Exfoliator, £4.50. It comes in handy lipstick bullet form and melts into the lips, helping to get rid of any dead skin.

Lip balm should also your best friend when it comes to nailing the look. A classic pot of Carmex Original Lip Balm, £3, will do the trick. Pat onto the lips before lining them, layering on lipstick and then applying your lip topper.

Here are seven of the best lip toppers for an ethereal glow, metallic edge or just a fun wash of glitter.

Huda Beauty Lip Strobe

Huda’s multi-functioning metallic shades are packed with iridescent shimmer and duo-chrome pigments. Layer Flawless, a golden amethyst hue, over a dusty pink liquid matte for sheer coverage gloss without stickiness.

Urban Decay’s Vice Special Effects Lip Top Coat transforms a standard lipstick. If you’re want to be bold, try Monarchy - a sparkly purple with gold accents. The comfortable gel-cream formula creates a water-resistant barrier that stops smudging and seals in the colour underneath.

This top coat from glitter heavyweights Stila can be worn alone or over matte lipstick. It’s perfect for those who want a little bit of sparkle sans the glossy, latex effect.
