Make-up took a backseat at the Oscars and hair embellishments were centre stage

Intricately embellished hairstyles were the defining beauty looks from the 2018 Academy Awards.

The 2018 Oscars beauty looks were nothing if not varied. Salma Hayek, Tracee Ellis Ross, Olivia Munn and Taraji P Henson championed a bold lip with dramatic eye make-up, while Saoirse Ronan, Frances McDormand, Adriana Lima, Jane Fonda and Margot Robbie kept it minimal and understated. But where attendees played it safe with make-up, hair embellishments came into their own. Woven metallic threading, painted stencils, African headpieces and floral embellishments all featured on the red carpet.

Floral decorations

Andra Day’s hair stylist Tony Medina accessorised her slicked-back, larger-than-life ponytail with small pink flowers, perfectly complementing her Victorian-style gown.

Hair stylist Mara Roszak incorporated individual flowers into Haley Bennett’s hair, delicately placing them on the ends of her wavy bob, in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it style.

Golden threads

Lupita Nyong’o wore her hair with gold threading woven throughout in triads. Vernon François took inspiration from images of Amasunzu hairstyles traditional to Rwandan culture. She finished off the sculpted look with a wash of blue eyeliner, deep pink lips and statement diamond earrings.

African headpieces

Comedian Tiffany Haddish paid homage to her Eritrean roots, wearing a traditional gown, known as a zuria, and matching golden headpiece down her centre parting in honour of her late father.

Head stamps

Black Panther star Danai Gurira rocked a daring hair stamp on the side of her shaved head. Playing Okoye in the film (the leader of an all-female Wakanda special forces unit), Gurira shaved off her afro for the role. The actress accented her fade with temporary white hair dye detailing, keeping her make-up simple with smudged eyeliner, flushed cheeks and a deep pink lip.
