Most memorable on-set transformations

Published

Jennifer Aniston was spotted in a cemetery in L.A this week, on the set of her new film Cake.

The 45-year-old actress has de-glammed to play a woman who becomes fascinated by the suicide of another woman in her chronic pain support group.

‘Make unders’ have become a bit of a boon in Hollywood, and plenty of actresses who have taken the plunge have been rewarded with critical acclaim, awards and accolades.

But compared to some of Hollywood’s most famous on-set transformations, Jen’s is pretty tame. Here we look at some of the most memorable:

Charlize Theron – Monster

Was this the transformation that started them all? Charlize Theron shocked movie-goers in 2003 when she stared as real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. She scooped Best Actress at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards and saw her career skyrocket. Let’s not forget her co-star Christina Ricci, who played her lover.

Tilda Swinton – Grand Budapest Hotel

She reportedly sat in hair and make-up for five hours every morning to play Madame D, a wealthy octogenarian, in the Grand Budapest Hotel. Complete with sagging neck, cataracts and liver spots, she gained 40 years and told reporters at a press conference that ‘Madame D is what I look like when I don’t put on all this makeup’. Hmm.

Mariah Carey – Precious

One of the most renowned showbiz divas, Mariah Carey shocked everyone when she played the role of a social worker in the devastating film Precious. Barely recognisable, Carey had brown shoulder-length hair, a plain wardrobe and what looked like not a scrap of make-up on. Such an outstanding performance that we almost forgot it was her.

Anne Hathaway – Les Miserables

Hathaway dropped 25lbs and shaved her head to play starving prostitute Fantine on the 2013 re-make of Les Miserables. The star revealed that her weight loss left her so fragile, that she broke her arm on-set. However, her hard work paid off with her performance winning her an Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.

Jared Leto – Dallas Buyers Club

The actor-turned musician-turned actor again, transformed into a very convincing transgender woman in the Dallas Buyers Club, bagging himself an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He lost more than 40lb to play HIV-positive Rayon, opposite Matthew McConaughey and stayed in character for the entire shoot. It’s a long way from Jordan on My So-Called Life…
