Other than finding the ultimate red carpet dress, come awards season, or any other big do for that matter, there's also the important question of make-up and hair.
The trick to getting the ideal beauty look for an event is to ensure that it complements your outfit. Although you want it to look great it its own right, it can't be too bold so that it overpowers the frock.
Over 2014, there were so truly astonishing and beautiful make-up and hairstyles spotted on the red carpet. Big hair was in this year, with many an A-lister opting for backcombed styles.
Other popular choices were bright colours such as pink and purple, and the bob (we're looking at you Jourdan Dunn and Coco Rocha) made a come back too.
Here, we've selected our favourite looks from Natalie Dormer's shaved head to Scarlett Johansson's androgynous crop, and why they made it into our list.

At this year's Screen Actors Guild Awards in LA, the Game of Thrones star turned up with half of her head shaved. While it was originally for her role in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, she turned it to her advantage by giving her usually groomed look a punky edge.
At the Screen Actors Guild Awards Amy Adams opted for delicate pinned curls just resting on her neck. Classic old-school glamour.
Where do we start with this look. Not only is Joan rocking that indigo lipstick, which is just incredible next to her skin, there's also the side plait that takes this whole look to an otherworldly level, ideal for this year's Met Ball.
Another fan of the swept-back look, A-lister Amber went for high hair and brown smoky eyes at this year's Golden Globe awards.
Star of Blue Is The Warmest Colour, Lea is a real cameleon when it comes to red carpet looks. Here at the Baftas she went for gentle curls with a side parting and smoky eyes with a blue khol underneath, setting off the colour of her red hair perfectly.
This look might be fairly divisive but we love it. Instead of opting for her usually straight hair, Fearne's gone full Edward Scissorhands (but in a good way) for this year's Baftas and pumped up the volume to the max with these buffant curls.
Since she chopped her hair off, J-Law hasn't had the chance to play with her hair much. But this look at this year's Oscars showed how versatile elfin crops can be with this slicked back look.
Emma can basically go for any hair colour and we'll think she looks amazing. But perhaps our favourite hue is this red, which she wore in soft waves to the premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The clashing fuchsia lips and mustard yellow dress made this a winning look in our books.
Known for her impeccable style, we simply couldn't get enough of Diane's low up-do, which included loads of tiny intricate plaits all pinned up. Ideal for a show-stopping look for this year's Oscars.
Supermodel Naomi is usually spotted with her locks straight and with a fringe but at the GLAAD Media Awards in LA this year, she decided to go for her natural afro hair.
Pink lipstick, a loose wave, and a headband make this the ultimate Sixties-style hairdo for Blake at the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York this year.
A fan of the short do, model Coco Rocha decided to go for bangs this May, which she wore with black eyeliner and orange lips at amfAR Cinema Against Aids 2014 Gala in Cannes this year. An incredibly strong look.
After years of being known for her long blonde tresses, The Big Bang Theory star Kaley went for the chop, which she debuted at the Critics' Choice Television Awards, Los Angeles.
In July Kristen attended the Chanel show in Paris and wowed the world with her newly short do, which also had a shock of orange running through it.
Lily is one celebrity whose hair-dying antics we can barely keep up with. Here, at the Serpentine Summer Party in Hyde Park she's gone for pink ombre with purple on top.
Another fan of the bob this year was supermodel Jourdan Dunn whose ombre locks were chopped into a slick bob. She first appeared on the red carpet with this look at the MTV music video awards back in August.
When Lena Dunham posted up a picture of her newly platinum blonde hair, the world (OK, just die-hard Girls fans) went mad. Here she is at the Emmy awards looking sensational.
For a long time now, we've considered Nicole Richie to be one of our favourite style icons. Here she is at a gala in November with some newly dyed blue hair.
Who knew that school girl plaits can look cool on grown-ups? Clearly Alexa Chung does as she decided to wear this style to her Nails INC launch at Selfridges last month. A trend for 2015 perhaps?
Another celeb who's a fan of the hair dye, Kate Hudson wore this subtle pink shade to the American Cinematheque Award Show in Los Angeles. How to be a rebel without going too far.
New mum Scarlett only gave birth in September but her look is as strong as ever. This slicked back androgynous cut, which she wore to the Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York, is fresh and feminine and is one we're desperate to copy.
To complement her blue dress she wore to the Screen Actors Guild Awards (you can see just the edge of it below), Lupita went for bright blue iridescent eye shadow and pink lipstick. While most would have looked terrible in the get up, Lupita makes it look chic.
A dark take on Elle Woods, Reese opts for a bright pink lip with dark eyes at the Inherent Vice film premiere. A new red carpet classic we think.
While she never fails to look stunningly beautiful, this look on Keira is one we'll be trying to copy ourselves. The smoky brown eyes and cheek contouring, which she wore to the Hollywood Film Awards, was perfectly paired with a nude lip to complete the whole sultry effect.
At this year's British Fashion Awards, Rihanna went for a much more pared back look than usual with minimal make-up and a messy top knot.
