Give yourself a mini massage

“We all know taking time out for self-care is important, so I like to add a little scalp massage on wash day,” says Liz Taw, hair stylist for the likes of Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jessie Ware and Awkwafina. “Not only does it relieve tension, but it helps stimulate blood circulation and keep your follicles healthy. There are lots of different tools used in different cultures, so find one that resonates – whether it’s a jade comb, a frozen lemon half rubbed vigorously over the head, a silicon scalp stimulating brush or just finding pressure points with your fingers.”

Make your slicked-back bun multitask

“I love a sleek look, so sometimes I go to work with a hair mask on and my hair up in a slicked back bun, then rinse it off in the evening,” says Muldoon. “I get so many compliments on the bun and when I tell people why it looks so sleek they’re always intrigued. If you feel like you don’t have time for treatments, this is the perfect solution.”

Embrace pre-wash oil

The aim of washing might be to reduce grease, but that doesn’t mean you can’t lean into oil before you shampoo. “I always recommend doing a pre-wash scalp oil treatment if your scalp is dry or you have dandruff or hair loss,” says Cort Bray Le’aupepe, hair stylist and colourist at The Hair Bros. “I like to make my own with mostly sweet almond oil and a few drops of either tea tree oil or rosemary oil. I’ll massage it into the scalp with a silicone brush, run the remainder through the ends and clip it up for an hour before I wash.”
