Homemade beauty remedies and DIY skincare secrets loved by the A-list

Let's face it (yes, that pun was intended), keeping your skin looking fresh and beautiful can be a fairly hard task in the winter, and not to mention expensive. 

Now, while we're aware that celebrities have access to the best skincare experts and brands on the planet, sometimes even they know that a decent homemade concoction can work just as well. 

To prove our point, we've hunted down some of the best DIY tips from some of the most beautiful A-listers around, who all boast great hair and skin. 

From Kate Moss submerging her face in a bath of ice to Jennifer Aniston scrubing her lips with sugar and water, you'll be pleased to know that great looking skin really doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag. 

Right, you'll have to excuse us, we're off to make an avocado face mask while we put some mayonnaise in our hair.

    For those who might be feeling the affects after a big night out but want to look fresh, Kate advocates filling a sink with ice and cucumber and submerging your face. According to Kate, “It instantly tightens everything making you feel and look instantly awake”.

    Posh is a fan of using cool water at the end of the shower as it tightens skin and smooths hair cuticles to boost shine. She apparently learnt the trick from band mate Geri Halliwell and said in her book That Extra Half an Inch,“Just repeat to yourself, ‘Short-term pain, long-term pleasure, short-term pain, long-term pleasure.’”

    Every morning, after brushing her teeth Cameron Diaz drinks a large bottle of water as the actress says “it completely wakes up my digestive tract”.

    Speaking to InStyle, Cate Blanchett said that “olive and macadamia oils are really good for your complexion. Put one of them on in the shower and they make your skin zing. I incorporate them into a homemade scrub with grapefruit juice and sea salt — a beauty trick taught to me by a friend of mine.”

    If you suffer from acne but want a natural remedy, try mixing a clove of lemon, two tablespoons of vinegar and 950ml water. Hayden Panettiere's a big fan of this too.

    For those with sensitive skin, Emma has some advice “I’m seriously allergic to everything. So I just use natural grapeseed oil from the grocery store on my face as a moisturizer. After the shower, I pat it on, and then I’ll use it throughout the day and at night. I pretty much smell like grape all the time.”

    CZJ is a real fan of using beer to remove any buildup that sits on the surface of the hair. After shampooing, towel dry, then massage a cupful or so of beer into your strands. Cover with plastic wrap for five minutes, then rinse.

    “To reduce puffiness, slice up a few refrigerated potatoes, soak them in water for a moment or two and then place them over your lids for 15 minutes. Works like a charm,” says Lauren Conrad.

    If you're going out for a big night, Scarlett Johansson offers the following advice: “If my skin is dull or I have red spots before a big event, I sweep raw lemon over it, to make it brighter. It stings a bit, but it's not at all harming. It's my favorite thing.”

    Organic advocate Miranda Kerr offers this advice for great-looking hair: “Hair-wise, I love using coconut oil as a treatment and apple cider vinegar for shininess—you put on a little bit in the shower as a rinse, and then wash it out. It stinks a little, but then you use conditioner and the smell goes away.”

    To get great looking and feeling lips, Jennifer Aniston likes to put half a teaspoon of sugar and a little water on a toothbrush and scrub her lips for a minute.

    Rather than putting loads of product on your face, Salma Hayek reckons you should go the other way. “Don’t wash your face in the morning. At night your skin is rebuilding oils that you need to keep your skin young. In the morning you can splash it with water but you don’t want to get rid of that.”

    Jessica Biel is a fan of using the avocado face mask. If you mash half an avocado and apply it directly on to your face and wash it off when it dries up completely.

    “[My mom] used to put oil or mayonnaise on the bottom half of her hair before she would shower. That way, when she would shampoo, the soap wouldn’t strip the bottom of the hair and dry it out, making it brittle,” says Blake.
