From chic, sleek blow-dries to Gigi Hadid-inspired braided ponytails, these are all the hair trends you need to know about ready for spring/summer 2020.
It’s also the time when an array of new season hair inspiration comes to the fore, so we’ve rounded up the biggest and best looks from shows across all four cities, ready for you to start wearing in spring/summer 2020 (which, yep, we know feels like ages away but honestly if we’re judging things on how quickly this year has gone, it’ll be here in no time at all).
From chic chignons, to the sleekest, bounciest blow-dries and traditional three-strand plaits, here’s a round-up of s/s20’s biggest hair trends, fresh from the catwalks.

Speaking backstage at Moschino, hair stylist Julien D’Ys said, “For the hair looks, I chose to draw inspiration from the power and strength of the women portrayed by cubists, a strong and independent charming woman. I tried to give the hair a touch of colour and illusion of material as if it were a painter’s canvas.”
After blow-drying with the ghd air, £99, hair was then styled into a defined central parting and two front side sections, one on the right and one on the left. Sections were pulled together and ghd’s curve classic curl tong, £129, was used to create a smooth wave before being tied in a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. A hair donut was then put in the base of the ponytail and fixed with hairpins to make a chignon. Finally, serum was applied with a make-up brush on the front part for added shimmer and shine.
With hair created by Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau, the final look had a luxe feel.
“The key product is Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame, £13.50, to heat protect the hair. I’ve blow-dried hair smooth and added a bit of intentional texture back into the lengths with a flat iron and texture spray. The result is a luxurious finish; a texture that has become quite popular. It’s easy, but it has a ‘finish,’ so it’s not completely natural,” he said.
Just-washed, fresh-out-of-the-shower hair was order of the day at Versace’s s/s 2020 show
“I’ve done a wet look at Versace this season using Redken Hardwear 16 Gel, £18.90, Redken Shine Flash 02, £16.50, and Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray, £13.50. It’s meant to feel like you just got out of the shower – it’s very messy, very sexy, and very Donatella.” – said Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau
With each model having added sideburns, Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau said, “There’s a nod to the 20s and to the bourgeoisie this season at Prada. However, there’s still a bit of strangeness to the look with a contemporary spin. I’ve added in little sideburns on each girl for a touch of boyishness. There are details in this look’s simplicity that lend themselves to different references, all while staying very on brand. The look on every model adds a touch of uniformity, while still allowing the models’ personalities to shine through in their own way.”

Retro pigtails were order of the day at Bora Aksu. Lead stylist Tina Outen for L’Oreal Professionel said, “It’s loose, weathered and worn with a tough individual style. Super messy and strong, yet unapologetically feminine.”
“The hair at Victoria Beckham this season is very chic, beautiful, and slightly masculine. I’ve used Redken’s Extreme Play Safe, £21.50, leave in to heat protect while blow-drying and flat ironing the girls’ hair to get it very straight. Then I’ve raked hair back with my fingers, spritzing with Redken Fashion Work 12, £13.50, to hold. I finished it with a very chic chignon. The overall feeling is very groomed, pulled together, adult, and rich,” says Redken global creative director Guido Palau
Adam Reed, ghd’s global ambassdor, was inspired by “the attitude and textures of Heny Holland’s s/s 2020 collection” so he created a look that centered around playful hair with a narrow silhouette.
Strong, clean center partings were paired with sleek, smooth hair using the ghd Platinum+ Styler, £189, while the ghd Soft Curl Tong, £129, was used to add a wave to random lengths of hair, allowing ends to fall loosely with no real uniform.
A stylish and simplistic look that was created by Bea Carmichael for Aveda. First, Aveda Thickening Tonic, £22, was applied before hair was dried into the shape of a low pony tail.
Aveda Control Force, £23, was used at the top to give a wet look finish, while Smooth Infusion Nourishing Styling Creme, £24, was used through the ends of the ponytail. It was then twisted and tied with an elastic before a bow was added at the end of the knot.
Hair, created by Duffy using KMS, was inspired by the Irish countryside and was designed to compliment the embellishment and embroidery throughout Simone Rocha’s s/s 2020 collection.
There was a mix of textures and structured sectioning that created volume and rigidness to an otherwise feminine look. A variety of materials, including woven raffia and embellished accessories, completed the look. Key products used included KMS Addvolume Liquid Dust, £18, and KMS Hairstay Anti-Humidity Seal, £21.
Two looks were created by Benjamin Muller for Aveda at Emilia Wickstead. “Both looks aimed to provide a careful balance between femininity and masculinity, with a focus on profile elongation and smooth finishes throughout,” he said.
Aveda Thickening Tonic, £22, was used to to prep hair - with a focus on the roots and hair line in particular. Hair was then either pulled into a low or high ponytail depending on the look and held in place with elastic. After tying another piece of elastic at the end of the ponytail, padding of various sizes was added underneath the hair, folding it around to create a smooth, defined look.

“Individuality is really important to Gypsy Sport, so everyone is getting something a bit different and unique. I was inspired by people on holiday, but in a sort of fantasy world, and mixed 1920’s styles, like finger waves and pin curls, with futuristic 2020 looks.” – said Cutler hair lead, Evanie Frausto.
Models wore one of two looks: space buns or braids, and the hero product for both looks was Redken’s new Triple Pure 32 hair spray.
Created by James Pecis, the hair look at Kate Spade was inspired by a city safari, “A lady trying to escape from the chaotic streets of New York City, trying to find solace.”
Hair was prepped with Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray, £27, to add body before being dried with the Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer, £299.99. It was then pulled into a low ponytail before being braided and pinned into a chic chignon bun.
Head scarves were added as the final touch, wrapped around the twisted hair and tied at the bottom.
A classic, sleek blow-dry inspired by cool elegance and youthful charm. “The Dyson hairdryer allows me to create a glassy finish due to its unique ability to avoid causing extreme heat damage,” said hairdresser Bob Recine, the man behind the look.
Hair was first saturated with Redken Full Frame 07 Mousse, £18.50, and then dried in sections. Rollers were added for added bounce and body, then taken out at the last minute.
A chic, playful braid that hair stylist Odile Gilbert said was inspired by Gigi Hadid.
First, hair was prepped with Tresemme’s Extra Hold Mousse, £5.49 at the roots and blow-dried in using the Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer, £299.99. It was then pulled into a high ponytail before being loosely braided and pinned in place if necessary. Tresemme Compressed Micro Hair Mist, £3.05 was used to keep the look in place.
“The hair is inspired by 90s minimalism. It’s a simple, strong side part with a ponytail at the nape of the neck that feels quite rich, even in its simplicity,” said Guido Palau, Redken’s global creative director.
Hair was first blow-dried with a round brush for a smooth finish, and once fully dry a strong-side parting was created using a fine-toothed comb. It was then pulled back into a low ponytail and finished with a spritz of Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray.
At R13, Guido Palau said, “I’ve left each girl with their natural texture at this show and given them a greasy, rock and roll look, finished with a hat.”
First, hair was sectioned and saturated with Redken All Soft Argan-6 Multi-Care Oil, £26.50, throughout the lengths and ends until it had an almost-wet look. A wide-toothed comb was then use to drag pieces of hair across each models’ forehead for an effortlessly messy look.
The look was finished with bucket hats.
“This season’s Ralph Lauren look is classic Ralph. We have luxurious blowouts, low chignons – an assortment of looks. All perfectly complement the clothes and the classic Ralph aesthetic,” says Guido.
Hair was blow-dried using a boar-bristled brush for luxe texture, and once fully dried Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray, £13.50 was sprayed onto palms before being gently ran over flyaways to keep them at bay.
“I really focused on creating contrasting textures for this look,” Frank said. “When talking with Amy [Smilovic] about the collection, she explained how she used a lot of different fabrics – some shiny, some matte – and we decided it would be fun to represent that in the hair, too,” said Frank Rizzieri, Aveda guest artist.
The look, which features contrasting textures with a sleek centre part and natural dry waves, was created by first using Aveda Thickening Tonic, £21, to the back and ends of hair for extra volume and texture. Using each models’ natural parting, hair was then smoothed out and tucked behind the ears. Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion, £23, was added at the back and ends of for more dry-looking texture.
A loose, minimal three-strand braid that Aveda guest hair artist Jon Reyman described as a polished yet natural. “This look is very mellow,” he said. “I love how it can easily be worn on and off the runway, and it’s so easy to create.”
To get the look, Jon prepped hair with Aveda Volumizing Tonic, £21, to add subtle volume and shine. After parting hair down the center, he gathered it into a low ponytail before creating a classic three-strand brand. For models who needed added thickness, Aveda’s Shampure Dry Shampoo, £24, was sprayed into the mid-lengths and ends before braiding.
The Pyer Moss show had a 70s vibe that was inspired by rock and roll artists. The hair was created by Jon Reyman and all the models in the show were either black or multiracial.
“Hair has a slight nod to the 80s, as well as a nod to a modern take on Carolina herself who typically pulls her hair back and keeps it quite groomed,” explained Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau.
Hair was given a slight side parting, and volume and texture was added with Redken Guts 10, £18.50. The look was held with Redken’s high-Triple Pure 32 hairspray. The back of the hair was kept natural or slightly enhanced with an iron to keep it modern.
“There is an elegant sophistication in its simplicity,” added Guido.
“There’s a slight nod to the 80s this season at the Coach show. There’s a boyish feel to the look, while giving it a tomboyish flair by utilizing a Coach barrette in the hair. My key product at this show are Redken Extreme Play Safe, £21.50, to heat protect while I’m blow-drying and Redken Triple Dry 15, £13.50, to add texture and volume into the lengths, which I’ve left natural,” says Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau
“I worked with Guido and Marc to create individual colors that portray different personas on both models’ hair and on wigs. I used Redken Flash Lift Bonder Inside, Redken Shades EQ and Redken Color Gels Lacquers to create looks across onyx bowls to split dyes, skater blondes and normcore naturals via light brown and mid-blonde shades. Each look was carefully crafted to deliver a unique persona and caused every model to stand out in their own right to celebrate the beauty of each individual.” said Josh Wood, Redken’s global color creative director.
While hairstylist Guido who also worked on the show said, “We’ve taken individualism to an extreme here by having every model walk with a distinct look. For any blow-drys, my key product is Redken’s Extreme Play Safe, £21.50, to heat protect. Most of the looks involve hairspray as well, and I’ve utilised my new backstage must-have Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray, £13.50, for high hold without the crunch. The neutral fragrance is perfect for backstage.”
“The hair here is a definite nod to the 80s with very dramatic ponytails that were sculpted with Redken Hardwear 16 Gel, £18.90. A powerful dryer and great stylers are essential to any backstage look,” says Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau.
