World-famous make-up artist Caroline Barnes has worked with Kylie Minogue, Diane Kruger and photographer Rankin, among many other high-profile names. Here, she shares with Stylist her advice on how to work that tricky combination of make-up and the beach.

1. Forget the foundation

Foundation looks and feels too heavy for the beach. If your skin is in need of coverage choose a light tinted moisturizer and a creamy concealer to cover any imperfections instead.

2. Terrific tints

Although creams work far better than powders in the heat, you need to avoid adding any more creamy texture to your face on top of suncream. Tints, such as Max Factor’s Lipfinity Lip Tint pen(£5.99, boots.com) or Benefit’s Benetint (£24.50, benefitcosmetics.co.uk, that will act as a stain are perfect.

3. Mascara with care

Wear mascara, but just on your top lash. Avoid your bottom lashes as this is what stains your eyes after a swim. Always choose waterproof formulas and apply to the bed of your lashes for a long-lasting eyewear look.

4. Peach-shade blush

Blush can liven up a bare face on the beach but avoid pink shades, instead opt for peach.

After a long day in the sun and heat, your skin will be redder than usual and peach shades will neutralize this redness whilst brightening up your complexion.

5. Treat your t-zone

Full on shine is not attractive but powder sits too heavily on summer skin, so use a fuss-free blotting paper to matify the t-zone.

6. Clear coat varnish

Salt can quickly deaden the shine and colour of your nail varnish, so apply a clear top coat each night to re-introduce shine and refresh the colour.
