2019 Beauty Innovations

Beauty innovations that would have been unthinkable just months ago can now be part of your daily routine. Meet 2019’s most advanced products…

Forgo the disappointment of yet more unattainable New Years resolutions this year by instead resolving to invest in the latest and best in beauty tech.

Stylist have rounded up the best releases to look forward to in the coming months, and if that won’t get you through January, what will? From hair to gym skincare, our guide has you covered.

The customisable hairspray

Living Proof PhD Body Builder, £23

2019 Beauty Innovations

What is it?

A hair volumising spray with a customisable nozzle.

Why do you need it?

The changeable nozzle means you can hit the sweet spot every time, so whether you’re sporting a structured updo or bouncy beach waves, you’re less likely to ruin your style by under or over coating your strands. Genius.

How does it work?

While hairspray formulations have undergone vast improvements over the years, the aerosol canisters that house them have stayed much the same. Until now.

Understanding that the perfect hold is the most important piece of the puzzle when it comes to choosing a spray, Living Proof has developed technology more commonly used in the glue industry to create this never-seen-before nozzle that promises to deliver the perfect amount of mist every time.

Twist the nozzle to M (more) for a particle size that’s 46% bigger than average with a 2% higher spray rate, while turning it towards L (less) slows down the flow rate and reduces the particle size.

The styling shampoo

Redken Dry Shampoo Paste 05, £19.55

2019 Beauty Innovations

What is it?

Half dry shampoo, half styling product, this paste provides impressive hold and allows you to restyle throughout the day.

Why do you need it?

There’s no doubt that dry shampoo has revolutionised the hair game – it’s a godsend for mopping up excess oil and it’s great for adding texture, but it’s not always able to hold your style in place for a lengthy amount of time.

Enter Redken: one application of this paste provides long-lasting hold that’s re-workable, meaning you can style your hair over and over again to achieve the look you want without the worry of any product build-up.

How does it work?

With all the benefits of dry shampoo, this paste is formulated with charcoal – an ingredient known for its purifying properties. It helps to absorb any oil, leaving hair feeling fresh and looking clean.

The Dry Shampoo Paste can also be used on shorter styles to create undone texture, or on longer hair and braids to give some added volume and body at the root.

The light-adaptive concealer

Estée Lauder Double Wear Instant Fix 24HR Concealer + Hydra Prep, £25

2019 Beauty Innovations

What is it?

A double-ended concealer with one end to prep and hydrate skin and the other to correct.

Why do you need it?

When you’re trying to camouflage dark circles or mask blemishes, it’s tempting to go one shade lighter with your concealer. Trouble is, it’s then much more noticeable under natural light, making skin look patchy and uneven.

Thankfully Estée Lauder is solving this conundrum with a diligent double-sided wand.

How does it work?

One end acts as a primer, blanketing skin with hyaluronic acid to create a smooth surface and prevent the concealer from creasing. But its real genius lies in the correcting end.

Harnessing IntuiTone technology, a blend of optic-fused and jet-milled pigments that act like a chameleon, it works with your natural undertone to detect changes in the light and adapt accordingly. So whether you’re under the glare of office lighting or in the sunshine, you’ve got undetectable coverage.

The invincible mascara

Shiseido Controlled Chaos Mascara Ink, £25

What is it?

A mascara brush that doesn’t weaken or lose its shape over time.

Why do you need it?

Do you tend to bin your mascara far earlier than you (and your bank balance) would like? Usually, it’s not the fault of the formulation itself but rather the state of the brush that causes you to toss it.

The repetitive motion of combing it through your lashes as well as constantly pumping it in and out of the tube can weaken it, shortening its lifespan. This mascara’s clever brush has been created to withstand even the heaviest of hands.

How does it work?

Utilising memory flex bristles, the brush is able to bounce back into shape after every use. The bristles are also scalloped-shaped, creating five reservoirs in the brush that allow it to hold the optimal amount of product for full, fanned-out lashes.

During trials, people using this mascara saw a 250% increase in the volume of their lashes. Whether it’s your third or 300th application, this mascara will consistently give you a dramatic eye look.

The motion-activated skincare

FaceGym Training Sticks, £38.50

2019 Beauty Innovations

What is it?

Skincare that works harder the harder you work out.

Why do you need it?

Applying a serum before a gym session isn’t likely to be part of your routine, but that’s set to change thanks to FaceGym, which is putting an entirely new mark on the skincare map with formulations that are motion-activated.

Previously, sweat and heat were a sticking point for skincare, but FaceGym uses them to your advantage.

How does it work?

As you warm up, the first set of ingredients prep the skin, like stretching your muscles before exercising. Once you start sweating, this breaks down the second layer of encapsulated actives which are absorbed into the skin and get to work on increasing antioxidant levels.

The formula then continues to work for up to six hours after you’ve finished your workout. There are four sticks to choose from: the multivitamin to recharge, charcoal to detox, Brazilian pink clay to brighten and spirulina to lift. Has there ever been a better reason to renew your gym membership?

The skincare booster lotion

La Prairie Platinum Rare Cellular Life Lotion, £425

2019 Beauty Innovations

What is it?

A post-cleanse lotion infused with platinum.

Why do you need it?

For years, experts have preached about peptides being one of skincare’s wonder ingredients. They’re great at reinforcing proteins that naturally occur in the skin, helping to rejuvenate it.

But there is one snag: your body’s immune system is prone to attacking peptides, so they don’t always get to do their job – which is why La Prairie has reinforced its lotion with platinum.

How does it work?

Platinum does a stellar job of shielding peptides and antioxidants from the body’s defence system, allowing the regenerative actives to survive in the skin long enough to treat it.

The platinum peptides also speed up detoxification; known as autophagy, it’s a process that identifies deteriorating skin cells and starts to recycle them. By activating autophagy, the peptides force your collagen cells to act like they did when they were younger.

As a result, your skin becomes more resilient and better at absorbing follow-on serums and creams.
