Want show-stopping hair without the residue drama? Behold our curation of simple yet spectacular red carpet styles

The thing about party hair is that we like the concept - but we often don’t have the time or the will to follow it through. We want simple ‘dos that are somehow also spectacular, and can be achieved desk-side in under 10 minutes (we don’t ask much).

To help in this quest, we’ve put together an edit of standout styles that have wowed the crowds on the red carpet this year. Step right this way for ideas that trade minimum effort for maximum impact…

Loose and romantic

There’s no need for embellishment with this ravishing look from Thandie Newton at this year’s Baftas. Wear your hair loose with a central parting, and use your fingers to build up volume (if needed) with a texturizing spray.

Curls with a hint of grunge

All hail Brie Larson, who couldn’t resist giving her spiral curls a slight edge at the 2017 Oscars. Aim for relaxed curls with plenty of sea salt spray for the undone finish. The red lip and statement earrings give a nod to Hollywood glamour.

Retro glamour

Well look who was ready to take this year’s Baftas by storm… step forward, Penelope Cruz. The actor teamed a long bob with a choppy fringe and just a touch of volume at the back. Get yourself to a good hairdresser for a similar ‘do.

A striking quiff

Those with short hair (but plenty of it), might want to follow Scarlett Johansson’s lead at this year’s Oscars. The star’s hairdresser, Jenny Cho, used straighteners to lift strands from the roots, for a style that delivers real oomph.

Pony with bling

Model Chanel Iman shows us how to dress up a simple pony at an after-party for the Golden Globes this year. Cue: a low-lying tie with a cluster of strategically placed grips down one side, and statement earrings. Original, and oh-so easy to replicate.

Hot top knot

Hello, Alicia Vikander. The Oscar-winner’s choice of hairstyle for the Academy Awards this year was a deliciously simple top knot. Craft your own by pulling your hair into a high ponytail, and roughly clip into a bun. Team with a suitably bling necklace.

Hollywood waves

Finally, let’s hand it to Emma Stone. This year’s best actress winner arrived at the awards with hair that threw right back to golden-era Hollywood. Use bigger sections of hair for those loose, glamorous curls, and apply serum for a high-shine finish.
