The world’s most hedonistic music festivals have given rise to an Aladdin’s cave of dynamite hair trends.

These are events that harness freedom and expression at every turn, so the scene is ripe for unhampered ingenuity.

Buckle up as we take you on a journey of influential styles from four beloved fiestas on both sides of the pond...

Free-flowing at Woodstock

The free-spirited ambience of Woodstock, the music festival that set the agenda for all that followed, manifested itself in wild, untamed hair.

Mainly central parted styles fell loose and free, with the occasional improvised accessory – a head band or flower – used to add a little flourish.

Long before the days of Instagram fodder, these effortlessly bohemian styles derived their impact from a self-assured nonchalance and spirit of independence.

The summer of 1969 was alive and kicking in these free-wheeling, authentic looks.

Modern and punchy at Coachella

A firm fixture on the music festival calendar, Coachella is renowned for its confident, experiential style credentials.

Easy-going California vibes is the order of the day here and there’s a real sense that anything goes. Fancy braiding with a kaleidoscope of multi-coloured threads? Go for it. Want in on the space buns trend? The choice is yours.

Throw the rule book out the window when it comes to Coachella. This is the place to test-drive a whole host of contemporary, cutting edge ideas.

Kaleidoscope colour at Glastonbury

Of course, Britain’s most famous music festival would have a riot of colour right at its very heart.

From striking saffrons to punk-inspired pinks and periwinkle blues, Glastonbury is where you throw caution to the wind and gear up in full-on expressive mode.

Of course, this doesn’t have to mean hair colour alone. Like singer Laura Mvula, below, you could let flamboyant, tribal-inspired accessorising do the talking.

But the point is, this is not a time to feel shy or hold back. Go forth and conquer on the hair front. Whatever you feel like doing, there’s room to showcase it here.

Fun and frivolous at Bestival

One of the festival circuit’s more recent additions, Bestival – formerly on the Isle of Wight and now in Dorset - is no less exuberant for it.

Every year organisers set a fancy dress theme, which serves well to get people’s creative juices going.

It’s imagination that counts here and festival-goers really have fun, rather than taking themselves (or their hair) too seriously.

Get artistic with wigs, adornments and colour coordination. The wackier the better, and owning the look is key.
