A definite 90s thread ran through the beauty looks at Milan Fashion Week, with Kendall Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid and Kaia Gerber among the supermodels sporting everything from dark matte berry lips to messy space buns.
Among stand-out beauty looks of painted hair at Moschino, lightning shot eyes at Iceberg and full face glitter masks at Frankie Morello, a slew of distinctive 90s hair and make-up trends appeared on the runways at Milan Fashion Week.
The likes of Kendall Jenner, the Hadid sisters and Kaia Gerber presented updates to nostalgic styles of the era, including dark grunge lips, Lara Croft braids and pop star space buns for big name designers Max Mara, Fendi and Versace.
Max Mara
Dark berry lips and lid-to-brow pastel blue eyeshadow were 90s staples the world was, quite frankly, pleased to see banished from beauty counters. However, Max Mara presented a fresh update on the challenging duo with surprising results. The dark blue liner that once accompanied bright eye shadow has gone and the colour is now a sheer, delicate wash rather than an overpowering smear. Lips are well-defined but without a tell-tale darker liner and are perfectly matte.
The collection may have been inspired by spy thrillers, including our beloved Killing Eve, but when we saw those 90s colours teamed with double plaits and a vest, It was Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft, rather than Villanelle, who sprang to mind.
Versace
Lisa Stansfield, Natalie Imbruglia and Victoria Beckham were among many famous fans of wet-look hair back in the 90s and it was a style that came back with a vengeance on the catwalk at Versace - complete with kiss curls. A freshly blonde Kendall Jenner gave the look a rebellious and powerful upgrade with heavy brows, a neon jolt to eyes and fierce gold jewellery.
Fendi
Once beloved of Gwen Stefani, Mel B and Bjork, space buns are back. At least, they are on the catwalk at Fendi. Sam McKnight twisted Bella Hadid’s sleek bob into messy double top knots that make-up pro Peter Philips teamed with smudged glitter eyeliner for a disco vibe.
The Super Bob
If it weren’t for the AirPods, you could convince us this picture of Kaia Gerber was taken in the 90s. Yet, her soft symmetrical bob is key to keeping her look contemporary and exciting, rather than a parody of the era. Bella Hadid is another convert to the simple, relaxed bob. Think a modern Ally McBeal.
