Could there be a happier colour than orange? Stylist's Beauty Director Joanna McGarry doubts it...

"Orange is the make-up equivalent of knocking back that first, long-awaited passionfruit caipirinha on your Caribbean holiday. It’s a burst of sunshine in a mottled grey sky. And it shows you have a confident knowledge of summer beauty trends without trying too hard. We’re now dab hands at sporting orange on fingernails and emblazoned across lips so, if you’re au fait with these, take a step into the unknown with a new application.

Enter graphic orange eyes as seen at Derek Lam’s s/s 2011 show, where models’ eyelids were imprinted with a slash of neon orange, extended out into a sculptural flick. It’s a bold look: a fusion of carnival frivolity, Eighties sharp lines, modern minimalism – with a sprinkling of Grace Jones. I built up the intense orange colour across my lids using a small stubby brush and a Shu Uemura cream eyeshadow (in a now discontinued shade – a constant risk in beauty world). You can achieve the same effect by wetting your brush before applying a richly pigmented orange powder eyeshadow. But is it wearable? It’s debatable; I was met with some befuddled looks and frowns. But who cares? I was happy."
