Beauty Director Joanna McGarry tests out the brown eye make-up trend, as seen at Hussein Chalayan.

Who could have known that the Nineties revival would have stood firm for this long? It’s been lurking in the shadows as a key reference for several years now. If we continue at this rate, we’ll be sporting pencil thin brows and Buffalo boots come autumn.

Still, the Nineties has lots to offer the modern make-up lover, namely, an allegiance to minimalism (think Kate Moss, Calvin Klein campaigns) and an appreciation for a nude palette. Which is where the sepia eye comes in, as coined by Mac’s creative director of make-up artistry, Terry Barber, which made its mark on the Hussein Chalayan and Sass & Bide catwalks last autumn.

Choose a cream eyeshadow in a flat greige or a slight apricot tone which sits within the spectrum of your skintone and lightly dapple around the eye area using a mid-density, flattish brush. The surface area covered and intensity of the colour are yours to play with, just ensure you take a softly, softly approach.

There is a touch of Miss Havisham to it, which I found works well on a cold winter’s night. But steer clear if you’re feeling tired, as it highlights under eye bags – in a Lurch from The Addams Family way, which is as far from Nineties cool as you can get.
