Stylist's Beauty Director Joanna McGarry trials the flower petal lip trend, as seen at Prabal Gurung.

Life’s greatest moments pass by in the blink of an eye; a sunset, a proposal, discovering the best sushi on earth. Just when you think you’ve captured it, it’s gone. Such is the fickle nature of spring’s quirky hit, the flower petal lip, which presented itself on Prabal Gurung’s spring/summer 2012 catwalk to a chorus of ahhhs from the crowd.

With its fuchsia outer edge and plum inside tones bleeding into each other like ink on a silkscreen, both delicately beautiful and almost violently mischievous, it is the catwalk version of that one moment of perfection, that singular triumph when it all comes together – before the tipping point. Don’t try to eat, drink, kiss, or even speak – this lip takes no prisoners, with one fricative, it’s gone, smudged away or irreversibly diluted. Still, it delivers just the right amount of escapism, and left me feeling as though I had just painted on my own mini masterpiece.

More than that, it’s a helpful reminder of the power of make-up layering; after devouring itself, I was left with a bedazzling multidimensional mauve tone, which I strongly doubt I could recreate even if I tried. Another fleeting moment, right here.
