The embellished eye is the ultimate in night-time allure. It takes the smoky eye to a new level, delivering a captivating smoulder of darkness encrusted with molten bronze. When the models at Thakoon’s a/w 2013 show strode down the runway wearing said look, we casually dismissed its high fashion appeal as entirely unwearable. We were wrong. So wrong. Here’s why you need to try this look during the upcoming party season.
Stylist’s Beauty Director says: Powerful, pretty and opulent all rolled into one. My go-to products for this incredibly starry eye were Chanel’s Illusion D’Ombre Longwear Luminous Eyeshadow in Apparition and Mac’s Glitter in Reflects Antique Gold, which I pressed on top for the gold leaf effect (you could also use real gold leaf if you’re feeling cashed up). My lids might have felt caked in shadow but this look is sexy and sweeping in the most theatrical way. I’m in love.
Stylist’s Beauty and Features Writer says:
There’s a formula here. A routine dark eye + metallics/glitter + nude lips + neutral brows = instant night-time New Yoik cool. It’s best done with fingers and minimal care to get that casual art-school dropout feel. Apply a creamy midnight blue shade to the lid and press on flecks of something shiny (glitter, foil; basically whatever you can find) to catch the light and draw attention to your eyes. This is my ultimate party eye, but if covering your entire lid with metallics fills you with horror, just apply a small amount to the inner corner for a subtle flash of light.
Stylist’s Beauty Editor says:
Backstage at Thakoon, make-up artist Diane Kendal added gold flecks to an inky cream shadow just seconds before the models took to the catwalk. So desperate was I to recreate these Byzantium lids that I didn’t stop to think about my method and ended up daubing gold glitter everywhere. My advice? Firstly, don’t attempt to replicate this look while wearing black and secondly, do persevere because a little bit of glitter is so worth the hassle.
Verdict: It’s unanimous love from the beauty desk – a feat in itself. An embellished eye is a beautiful look that traverses the line between classic and avant-garde, and finds itself resting in a mesmerising beauty no man’s land. So enamoured were we with this look that two of us actually wore it that very weekend. All hail the arrival of the new smoky eye – and not a moment too soon.
