Sunset, mermaid and rainbow. Nowadays, hair dye sounds like the fantastical day dreams of our six-year-old selves.

While we'd love to dip our locks into these spectacular trends, the thought of changing our minds, getting bored of it, damaging our hair and feeling inappropriate at work is enough to put us off it.

Perhaps that is the reason why one woman's 'secret' approach to hair dye is taking the internet by storm.

Jaye Harkness, a blogger from Singapore, shared pictures and a video of her latest hairstyle this weekend, which appears to be a classic black bob, until she moves a layer of hair back to reveal a spectrum of colours underneath.

"I really don't know what to call this, since it's apparently a new trend," (sic) she writes on YouTube.

"i want to call it 'TFW You Are Secretly Not A Muggle Hair', but i have no clue how to shorten that. others have called it 'hidden dyed hair', 'secret dyed hair', 'magical dyed hair', and i think someone called it 'peekaboo hair' once? i'm still sticking with my name, though. maybe i'll shorten it to 'Secretly A Wizard Hair'"

To create the look, Harkness says her hairdresser "gathered a bunch of my hair" and tied "the top in a circle-ish ponytail". They then "took the layer underneath that, and only dyed that part".

"There’s that layer of hair which was bleached and dyed, and there’s layers of hair underneath that which are my natural hair colour."

The look even works on longer looks. On Tumblr, she tells her followers: "When i had longer hair was dye a streak/part near the nape of my neck so that if i bunned it up a certain way, it couldn’t be seen at all!"
