Looking like Gwyneth Paltrow, you'd imagine, requires quite a lot of effort. Sure, she makes it look simple, with that easy-breezy, sun-bleached hair, no-mascara vibe she's got going on – but then you remember the exercise, the diet, the vaginal steaming, and it all seems a bit too much like hard work.
Paltrow didn't entirely dispel this impression in a recent New York Times interview. Revelations included that she once tried a beauty treatment called apitherapy, which involves being stung by bees (“People use it to get rid of inflammation and scarring. It’s actually pretty incredible if you research it. But, man, it’s painful”), and that she wants to try cryotherapy, a medical treatment where your skin is frozen and then thawed.
Despite this, she insists that she's more relaxed about her beauty and fitness regime than when she was younger: “I see now that life is really a balance. And it’s great to eat nutrient-dense organic food, if you can. It’s also really great to drink a vodka and have French fries.”
She also doled out a heap of recommendations for her favourite beauty products. Most of these were only available in the US, and/or prohibitively expensively ($125 for a face scrub, anyone?), but you can score some on this side of the pond – and we've got them all here. Paltrow glow, minimal effort.
1. COOLA Classic Face SPF 30, £26
It's safe to say that Gwyn has never bought a bottle of €2 own-brand sun cream from a Spanish supermarket. “I only use mineral sunscreens, never the chemical ones,” she says. “I don’t understand why anyone would put on carcinogens.” She's a fan of COOLA's eco-friendly, organic sunscreens, such as this naturally cucumber-scented version. Lighter than a traditional sunscreen, it's also packed with antioxidant oils including evening primrose and anti-ageing acai.
2. The Organic Pharmacy Detox Cellulite Body Oil, £34.95
Paltrow is “a real oil kind of girl”, apparently. “There’s a myth that oil is not good for your skin. I don’t believe in that at all.” When she's not using basic coconut oil from the kitchen as a leg moisturiser, she told The New York Times that she likes one of The Organic Pharmacy's body oils. She doesn't say which one, but we're guessing it's the one with ‘Detox’ in its name, because – well, it's Gwyneth Paltrow, isn't it? This cellulite oil is infused with juniper, grapefruit and rosemary, and smells divine.
3. RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek, £28
She doesn't wear much makeup during the day, something she attributes to the culture in LA, where she's lived since 2013. “You’re outside a lot, there’s hiking and swimming,” she told The New York Times. “It feels in a way that you’re more engaged with nature.” But she does occasionally cave and slap on a bit of cream blush by cult organic makeup brand RMS. This mineral lip and cheek stain is available in six shades, so there's one for all skin tones.
4. Juice Beauty Reflecting Lip Gloss, £15
Paltrow's obsession with “non-toxic” products extends to her lip gloss collection, and she says it's becoming “less and less hard” to find the natural beauty products she wants. Oh, happy day. She recommends Juice Beauty's lip glosses, which contain antioxidants – hello, old friends – and give a shimmering pop of colour.
5. Shu Uemura Art of Hair Moisture Velvet Shampoo and Conditioner, £44.20
Haircare is the one area where Paltrow concedes that her beloved non-toxic products aren't quite up to the job. To soothe her “dry, damaged, bleached hair”, she uses shampoo and conditioner by Japanese brand Shu Uemura. Their nourishing Moisture Velvet range contains camellia oil to leave fragile hair smooth and shiny.
