Sometimes you need to refresh your look and a new nail varnish won’t cut it. Whether it’s a change in season or a change in lifestyle, transforming your hair colour can instil a new sense of self-confidence just like a fresh new cut.

But dyeing hair is not an easy step for everyone. While some of us can’t remember a time we weren’t dyeing our hair - jumping at the chance the moment we became teenagers - the rest of us are still undecided on a shade or dread the thought of pouring a pot of dye on our strands.

This is where we can turn to our favourite celebrities for a few pointers -  a group of women who not only change their hair colour frequently for work, but swap and change hair shades for events, from awards season to film festivals. Jennifer Lawrence has undergone a complete transformation since 2012 as she’s risen to fame, while Chrissy Teigen has successfully experimented with lighter locks. We get a little hair colour inspiration from the stars…

  • Paloma Faith

Just a few months ago the singer opted for long, blonde locks.

  • Paloma Faith

Faith loves a dramatic transformation, but this might be our favourite one yet: a platinum blonde Lob.

  • Lily Collins

Since the British actress first graced our small screens back in 2009 in a guest role on American TV show 90210 we've come to associate Collins with lovely dark locks, and incredibly dark brows too.
  • Lily Collins

But now she's opted for one of the most drastic changes of all: blonde. Taking to Instagram in December to share her new look, Collins wrote: “Not sure if it's the blonde or this city, but I really am having more fun...”
  • Selena Gomez

Selena’s thick, dark tresses have been part of her signature look ever since she burst on the scene as a Disney actor. Now a world-renowned pop star, she often pairs a sultry smokey eye with her brunette locks and looks pretty fabulous doing it.
  • Selena Gomez

The songstress surprised fans when she came out to perform at 2017’s America Music Awards sporting a bleach-blonde bob. On the red carpet Selena flipped her parting to the side, creating even more volume for her tousled, textured look. What’s more, stepping even further away from her usual get-up, the singer rocked things up with a zips-and-leather dress combo.
  • Cheryl Cole

As the face of L’Oreal, Cheryl rarely has a hair out of place – and, while The X Factor judge has experimented with colour in the past, she tends to stick to a rich and deep chocolate-brown hue.

  • Cheryl Cole

Cheryl may have taken a break from Twitter following the birth of her son, but she returned with a bang in July 2017 when she revealed that she had opted for a bold colour makeover: her chocolate-brown tresses had been lightened and transformed into a sunshine-inspired caramel.

  • Chrissy Teigen

When asked to picture the model, TV presenter and #nofilters Twitter star, you no doubt focus on her deep brunette waves.

  • Chrissy Teigen

But, in July 2017, Teigen caused a stir when she shared a picture of herself on Twitter with the caption “new colour”. There’s no denying that the bright and summery strawberry-blonde shade is quite a departure from her usual look – but it certainly suits her.

  • Suki Waterhouse

The British model is well-known for her long, blonde, bohemian mane.

  • Suki Waterhouse

But in October 2014, she debuted her newly dyed brunette locks making her almost unrecognisable.

  • Jennifer Lawrence

In 2012, two roles threw Jennifer Lawrence into the limelight - Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games and Tiffany in Silver Linings Playbook. Much like her on-screen characters, Lawrence worked darker locks in real-life.

  • Jennifer Lawrence

But in late 2013, during the second Hunger Games film tour the star revealed a new blonde pixie crop, saying her hair had been "fried from being dyed so much". She has since worn her hair closer to her natural blonde shade.

  • Emma Stone

You would be forgiven for thinking Emma Stone is a natural redhead, but whilst filming The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2, the actress returned to her natural hair colour - blonde.

  • Emma Stone

But the moment filming finished she dyed her hair a light ginger colour which has now evolved into a deep fiery red.

  • Scarlett Johansson

Known for her Marilyn Monroe-esq blonde waves, Scarlett Johansson
once opted for a brunette look from 2008 to 2009.

  • Scarlett Johansson

However she has remained a dark blond since, often with darker roots and lighter ends, until she debuted an even lighter shade on her new cropped style this week.

  • Angelina Jolie

In the last ten years, Angelina Jolie's hair has changed very little except for the highlights on her naturally dark mane. While in London during the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict she wore a reddish-hue.

  • Angelina Jolie

When she was made an honorary dame by the Queen in October 2014, her hair looked considerably darker.

  • Kate Mara

*House of Cards spoiler alert* Since Mara's departure from Netflix's hit series in which she plays political reporter Zoe Barnes, the actress has chanelled a blonde bob.

  • Kate Mara

However ahead of autumn, the star dyed her shorter locks a caramel brown shade.

  • Natalie Portman

The Hollywood starlet continuously switches from brunette...

...to ombre. This golden caramel is her latest shade.

  • Margot Robbie

The Australian actress burst onto the Hollywood scene with blonde hair and piercing-blue eyes, earning the female lead role in Wolf Of Wall Street.

  • Margot Robbie

But just ahead of awards season the star transformed her look with darker hair.  “I had brunette hair actually all through high school, so I’ve always really loved this colour,” she said. Things lightened up once she hit the audition circuit. “When I started working and acting, they all wanted me to have blonde hair,” she says. Going back to her old colour for a role in the upcoming sci-fi film Z for Zachariah was a nice change, she said.

  • Julia Roberts

The Oscar-winning actress has tried every hue from platinum blonde to brunette. So it's no surprise she has effortlessly gone from ombre to...

  • Julia Roberts

...blonde in mere months. She's one star who endlessly shows she can wear any colour.

  • Reese Witherspoon

The American star went for a rich brunette hue when she played June Carter in her Oscar-winning role in Walk the Line.

  • Reese Witherspoon

However she soon went back to the blonde she's famous for.

  • Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams frequently wears her hair blonde.

But in April 2013, she died her hair red for the first time having been inspired by her mum. "My mother is a redhead, so I thought maybe I could pull it off. If she could do it, maybe I could do it. I don’t know, I just thought that it would be fun," she said.

  • Kelly Osbourne

In 2012, Kelly Osbourne dramatically changed her blonde locks for the long term...

...opting for a rich purple hue, which she has made her signature look.

  • Olivia Palermo

The fashion blogger and former reality TV star doesn't often stray far from her chestnut locks with caramel blonde highlights. However, after she tied the knot with model Johannes Huebl, she decided to go for something different...

  • Olivia Palermo

For the summer months, Palermo went for a lighter, denser shade of blonde.

  • Carey Mulligan

After playing the blonde Daisy Buchanan in 2013's The Great Gatsby, the British actress' light crops has become an instantly-recognisable look.

  • Carey Mulligan

Which might be why late last year the star rocked up at a premiere with a lovely warm chestnut updo.

  • Sofia Vergara

Sofia Vergara has a fairly consistent signature beauty look: long, loose and thick hair cascading down and around her shoulders. The Modern Family star worked chanelled a dark chocolate colour for years until...
