It’s all very well perusing Amazon’s bestseller lists, but sometimes, we’re in the mood for a book that we can’t quite define.
We just know we want it to be original, exciting and deliciously moreish to read. Something that we’d press on our friends to consume the moment we’d finished it.
Which is why a niche new books website has captured our attention.
Lounge Books is a fresh venture launched by Sam Missingham, former digital project manager at HarperCollins.
According to The Bookseller, Missingham's goal is to dig out “hidden gems” of the bookshelf that will serve those looking for “people-powered” recommendations.
In other words, it promises to meet the needs of those of us who don’t quite know what we’re searching for – beyond the fact that it should be brilliantly readable.
A first glance at Lounge Books is heartening, with compelling sections that list titles by women authors, debut authors, diverse voices and Young Adult fiction – among other categories.
There’s even an area dedicated to “book porn", which showcases beautifully designed or illustrated works for “book sniffers or strokers”.

Missingham’s recommendations are influenced by the book blogging community, whom she refers to as "the engine of book discovery". She's also working with an advisory board of dynamic novelists including Nikesh Shukla, author of Coconut Unlimited, and bestselling rom com writer Jill Mansell.
“In very simple terms, I'm hoping to put more books into more hands,” Missingham says. “The Lounge Books website will help you navigate the huge number of books out there, give you a few pointers, tell you about books that everybody is talking about, those winning awards and some hidden gems.
“It has been an idea bubbling in my head for the last five years and it's a thrill to turn it into a real thing.”
Happy reading, one and all...
