Thrillers came out on top as the genre women would most like to see on the bookshelves of a prospective partner, closely followed by non-fiction in second place and biographies in third.

But for men the focus shifted, as they admitted their interest would be piqued by a partner who enjoyed reading erotica - making it the number one genre they’d like to find in their date's library.

The survey did find common ground between the sexes however, with thrillers coming in at the second most attractive genre for men, and biographical books at third.

So should every first date start with a swapping of literary inventory? Elite Singles psychologist Salama Marine says that might not be a bad idea.

“People look for those who have interesting hobbies, and reading is one of them," she says.

"Why? Because a great book leads to great discussions. Your taste in books can highlight aspects of your personality: are you curious, romantic, dreamy? By sharing your tastes you can show and share your inner world.”
