She saved us from our yearly January gloom last year with the publication of her smash hit The Girl on the Train, a tale that had us gripped with its dark telling of the events set in motion when alcoholic Rachel spots something mysterious happening from the window of her train.

Having sold over 18 million copies of the novel worldwide, and transformed it into a critically acclaimed Hollywood blockbuster starring Emily Blunt, author Paula Hawkins is now back – with her second book set for publication next year.

And Stylist is the first to reveal the cover design and details behind the hotly anticipated release.

The tale, called Into The Water, is a psychological thriller written in Hawkins’ now-signature style, with twists and turns guaranteed to keep you flipping through the pages well into the night.

Following the story of two sisters living in a small riverside town, Into The Water is billed as a gripping exploration of the lies we tell ourselves and others – and the devastating impact that the truth can have on those we are closest to.

Speaking about the book, Hawkins said, “This story has been brewing for a good while. For me there is something irresistible about the stories we tell ourselves, the way voices and truths can be hidden consciously or unconsciously, memories can be washed away and whole histories submerged.

“Then two sisters appeared, and the novel began to form.”

Fans of Hawkins’ debut novel, The Girl on the Train, and the domestic-noir genre that has seen powerful – and often unlikeable – female protagonists take centre stage in books such as Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and ASA Harrison’s The Silent Wife, certainly won’t be disappointed with her latest offering.

Into The Water is incredibly dark and moving.  Only Paula Hawkins could have written it,” Lizzy Kremer, Hawkins’ literary agent, said in a statement. “It is an unflinching and original book that is both a terrific thriller and a beautiful novel.”

Sarah Adams, who edited the book, also heaped praise on the novel.

“Into The Water drips with suspicion and the ghostly echoes of the past.  It is a menacing, moving, deeply satisfying read which entranced me from first page to last,” she added.
