If you were moved by Hillary Clinton’s message to young girls in her concession speech in November, we’ve got good news for you. The former Democratic presidential candidate is releasing a picture book – and it looks set to be the perfect way to get young children thinking about society, community and politics.

It Takes a Village is based on Clinton’s 1996 non-fiction book of the same name. The children’s version – with illustrations by Marla Frazee – will be published by Simon & Schuster this autumn, according to a report by The Bookseller.

“Over twenty years ago, the original It Takes a Village inspired the nation to think critically about how the choices made today, to raise our children and support families, will determine how we face the challenges of the future,” said the publisher.

“This picture book edition will bring this inspiring message to a new generation in a format that is perfect for story time and bedtime.”

Writing on Instagram, illustrator and children’s book author Marla Frazee said: “Coming Fall 2017 from @simonandschuster by #hillaryclinton … and me!”

It Takes a Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us was published when Clinton was First Lady of the United States. It explores the impact individuals and groups outside the family can have on a child’s wellbeing, and presents Clinton’s vision for the children of America.

Predictably, the book came in for criticism from some Republicans, who disliked its collaborative, let’s-all-pull-together message. At the same time, It Takes a Village received widespread critical acclaim, spent 20 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and was published in over 20 countries.

Clinton released her last book, the memoir Hard Choices, in October 2014.

Clinton is also working on a book for adults: a collection of personal essays inspired by “the hundreds of quotations she has been collecting for decades”, according to her publisher.

In a statement, Clinton said that the as-yet-unnamed book of essays will also cover her experience of last year’s presidential campaign.

“These are the words I live by,” she said. “These quotes have helped me celebrate the good times, laugh at the absurd times, persevere during the hard times and deepen my appreciation of all life has to offer.”

She added: “I hope by sharing these words and my thoughts about them, the essays will be meaningful for readers.”

Ian Chapman, the chief executive and publisher of Simon & Schuster UK, said: “We are extremely proud to be publishing Hillary Clinton’s new collection of essays. The publication of her memoirs [Hard Choices] in 2014 was a real publishing highlight and we are thrilled to be continuing our relationship with one of the most admired women in the world.

“We look forward to bringing her stories to UK readers this autumn.”

Clinton isn’t the only former first lady to consider turning her hand to picture books. In January, it was reported that Michelle Obama may pursue a career as a children’s author once the dust has settled from the Obamas’ time in the White House.
