J.K. Rowling's new book The Silkworm, published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, is released on 19 June 2014, but readers can dive into the first two chapters right now.
A 12-page excerpt from the upcoming novel was posted on Robert Galbraith's website yesterday for readers to view online or download.
The Silkworm is a follow up to Rowling's first crime novel The Cuckoo's Calling, which released last year, and it sees the return of private detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin Ellacott.
The pair investigate a new case in which an author has gone missing.
"The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published it would ruin lives – so there are a lot of people who might want to silence him," reads the official synopsis.
The first two chapters of novel make references to phone-hacking, a topic that Rowling has taken a personal interest in, where she chose to testify during the Leveson inquiry following the News of the World’s hacking scandal.
The Silkworm features a plot-line in which detective Cormoran Strike passes evidence of an affair between a member of the House of Lords and his secretary to a journalist.
When the journalist asks how Strike got the woman to talk to him, he says: "I listened". The reporter replies: "All the other private dicks I use spend their time hacking phone messages."
Last year, the Harry Potter author famously published The Cuckoo’s Calling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. Months after the release of the book, word leaked that it was actually Rowling who penned the mystery novel. The author has been quoted saying she "hoped to keep this secret a little longer”.
Since the success of the Harry Potter series, Rowling has released a series of works within the franchise and most recently Quidditch World Cup reports written in the voice of of Ginny Potter (née Weasley). The British author also published her first novel for adults, The Casual Vacancy, in 2012.
