Kate. T. Parker is on a mission: she wants to rebrand what it means to be a young girl today.

The photographer, from Atlanta, was looking through pictures she had taken of her eight and eleven year old daughters when she realised her favourite ones were the images that depicted them having fun.

In these snaps, her daughters showed a confidence and strength that is (for the most part) lacking in mainstream images of girls in the media: and Parker realised it was time for a change.

So she grabbed her camera and set off to capture young girls across the US at their most badass, for her new photography book aptly titled Strong is the New Pretty.

The photographer captured girls of all different ages, races and abilities, from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.

She snapped girls playing soccer, riding a skateboard or jumping into a swimming pool, as well as valedictorians or girls who were battling cancer.

Ultimately, Parker wanted to prove that the strength of girls has more than just one face.

As she told The Cut: “strength isn’t always loud and feisty.”

Parker now hopes her images inspire girls around the world to be who they truly are.

“I want to show girls what was possible, that they could and should be valued for who they are and what they do, as opposed to how they look,” she said.

“I hope that this message grows. I hope girls believe — and retain that belief – that they are amazing and strong and powerful.”
