Sage advice
Lime green’s more sophisticated sister is this year’s must-wear colour. Here’s how we’re doing it

The trousers

There’s something reassuringly competent-seeming about wide-leg trousers cut in a sturdy fabric. Worn with a classic tee or button-down Oxford shirt, these sage green corduroy trews project a Katharine Hepburn-esque mix of elegance, intelligence and practicality: we can imagine someone in this outfit hoisting themselves capably over a garden wall as much as we can imagine her delivering an impassioned lecture at a fancy university. In other words, they’re entirely aspirational. £35, Monki

The sunglasses

Fun fact: we have William Shakespeare to thank for the term ‘green-eyed monster’. The Bard first linked envy to the colour in 1596’s The Merchant of Venice, in which Portia talks about “green-eyed jealousy”. (He didn’t refer explicitly to the green-eyed monster until Othello in 1604.) Feel free to wheel out those literary titbits when people compliment these classic sage shades, which is likely to happen preeeetty often. £28, Fat Face

The jacket

Here’s what we really like about sage: it’s got so much going for it. It suits all skin tones. It looks great with every neutral you already own. And it’s suitable for all manner of professions. Take this jacket, for example. Just like the aforementioned trousers, it’s both chic and utilitarian – a little bit ‘oh, hello, you’ve just disturbed me from my job as a car mechanic in a Wes Anderson film’. £129, Atterley

The skirt

Look, we all know that satin midi skirts are so In Right Now. But if you’re looking for an alternative to the ubiquitous leopard print, may we direct your attention to this supple sage number? The swingy cut makes it look much more expensive than it is, and the low-key green will go with anything (think of it as a hardworking neutral à la black or navy). You could wear it daily, and you’ll probably want to. £65, & Other Stories

The sandals

Six years ago, this deputy editor was studying in the US, and remembers being surprised that “all the sorority girls were wearing these dad-on-a-hike sandals”. Friends, those sandals were Tevas, the shoes currently gracing the feet of fashion editors and influencers worldwide. According to Stylist’s fashion news editor Billie Bhatia, they’re the natural next step for those who embraced 90s dad trainers and Birkenstocks – and they’re exquisitely comfy. £78, Free People Words by Moya Crockett
