Where to start a beautiful new hobby
From pottery workshops to jewellery-making classes. Plus, four brilliant September events to mark in your diaries

Plate up

We often find ourselves thinking about new hobbies at the start of September. This is partly because we still think about life in terms of the school year (autumn = learning time!), but also, we need things to replace our packed summer schedule of lying in the park. If you’re intrigued by ceramics, Token Studio near Tower Bridge offers lots of pottery classes: start with the plate-making workshop and work your way up. From £28; various dates and times; 23-25 Mill Street, SE1

Silver lining

Love the thought of making your own jewellery, but have absolutely no idea where to start? Luxury contemporary jeweller Maya Magal is running several workshops at Coal Drops Yard this September as part of London Design Festival, where you can make everything from bead jewellery to personalised charm necklaces and recycled silver wedding bands. Spaces are limited, so book your tickets quick. From £25; 19-22 September; Coal Drops Yard, N1C

Cut to the chase

Look at the work of artists like John Stezaker, Virginia Echeverria and Eugenia Loli and you’ll see how beautiful collage can be. To try your hand at the art form, head to one of Collage Club’s relaxed workshops: they’ll be cutting and sticking at The Hoxton hotel’s launch party in Southwark on 13 September (expect ping-pong tournaments and DJs, too). Can’t make it? Keep an eye on their website for more events. Free; dates and venues vary

Animal print

You might have tried life drawing, but what about wildlife drawing? At Wild Life Drawing classes, you can learn how to sketch IRL flora and fauna at a range of locations in London and beyond. Autumn programme highlights include a session on drawing ‘wolves’ (really British Lupine dogs) at Carousel London on 21 September, and another focused on animals of the rainforest at the London Aquarium (9 October). Lush. From £27.50; dates and venues vary

Dingle dangle

If you like your jewellery fun and fringy, head to tassel earring-making classes at ‘art gym’ MYO. You have to be part of a group of eight, but you can book the session to suit your schedule – and it’s a more exciting Saturday activity than brunch. Prefer drop-in workshops? MYO offers a near-endless variety of creative classes, from lino printing to ceramic painting and calligraphy. £50; dates flexible; 82 Redcross Way, SE1
