All the best bits at this year’s London Cocktail Week
The mixology extravaganza celebrates its 10th birthday this year – with 10 days of boozy fun. Starting today, here are the events we’ll be hitting up…

Palette pleaser

Discover your perfect cocktail at The Essence House, a 45-minute tasting experience curated by flavour perception expert Dr Rachel Edwards-Stuart. Embark on an interactive flavour discovery journey as you sample botanicals, flavours and aromas, before enjoying your bespoke cocktail whipped up by a top bartender. Alcohol-free options are also available for those off the booze. £10; until 5 October; 5 Great Newport St, WC2H

Bitter and sweet

Count Negroni walks into a bar and asks for an americano with gin. This odd request supposedly led to the birth of his namesake cocktail 100 years ago – and to celebrate its centenary, Henrietta Hotel is teaming up with Campari to host The Experimental Negroni Club, where eight vintage twists on the deliciously bitter classic will be served. Free entry; 4-13 October; 14-15 Henrietta St, WC2E

Supermarket sweep

Go wild in the aisles at London Cocktail Club in Shoreditch, which is being transformed into a mini-supermarket (very Chanel a/w 2014) for 10 days. You’ll get a cocktail on arrival, before being sent on a quest to fill your basket with nostalgic ingredients – which you’ll then turn into your very own drink. Coco Pops cocktail, anyone? £10; 4-13 October; 29 Sclater St, E1

Wild card

Want to try the States’ best new bar without flying to NYC? Masahiro Urushido – head bartender at West Village joint Katana Kitten – is appearing at Fitz’s Bar in Bloomsbury this Friday, where he’ll be creating classic British cocktails with Japanese ingredients. Try the infamous Umami Situation (sake, salted lemon and the juice of Atlantic shrimp heads) if you dare. Free entry; 4 October; Russell Square, WC1B

Mixologist mentoring

You can put cocktails away like a pro – but do you know how to make them? Finesse your shaking and stirring skills at The Covent Garden Cocktail Experiments pop-up, where there’ll be classes on how to make classic cocktails including the old fashioned, the daiquiri and the espresso martini. You’ll be the toast of your next dinner party. £6; 5 October; 5-7 Grape Street, WC2H

Dispatches from our mission to find London’s best restaurants, bars, food pop-ups and markets

Fun fact: 150,000 bees live on the roof of sleek Lambeth restaurant Florentine. They (the restaurant, not the bees) have now launched a limited-edition menu using the colony’s first batch of honey, with 10% of proceeds going to the Bee Friendly Trust. And while it sounds gimmicky, it totally works.

A smoked burrata starter (revelatory!) with salty-sweet roasted beetroot comes drizzled in honey and rosemary dressing, while dessert is panna cotta festooned with crunchy honeycomb shards and blackberries the size of babies’ fists. Order as a set meal (with honey and soy glazed duck as a main) or mix with dishes from the everyday menu. Just don’t skip the Madame Bee cocktail – it’s a gin-brut-honey-lemon marvel. Available Monday-Wednesday throughout October; 6 Hercules Rd, SE1 ● Words by Moya Crockett
