Introducing the all-weather autumn midi skirt
It’s the perfect replacement for the do-it-all slip. And to wear with it? Classic loafers and beautiful, charitable tees

Smooth operator

Coffee coloured suede is always a good idea, and this A-line midi skirt from high-street stalwart Marks & Spencer is no exception. Bridging the gap between summer and winter with its cold weather-appropriate cut, this clever multitasker gives you styling options for days, as does this slightly swishier silhouette from Navabi. Plus, that caramel hue is crying out for a coordinating latte. £199, M&S

Booksmart

Once upon a time, corduroy was the preserve of geography teachers, but the retro ridged fabric has since graduated to cool kid status. Case in point: this cosy, soft-to-the-touch midi, reinvented in a thoroughly modern shade of broad bean green. Style simply with a long-sleeve top, sneakers or loafers (scroll down for our current faves) – this skirt is a centrepiece in its own right. £65, Boden

Easy minimalism

Khaki: a criminally underrated colour, despite flattering a range of skin tones and going with literally everything (especially handy for your wardrobe when the weather can’t make up its mind between grey chilliness, torrential downpours and soft sun). This long, buttoned skater skirt has understated femininity all sewn up – just add your favourite slogan T-shirt for a personal touch. £34.30 (was £49), La Redoute

Stitch up

Have you noticed how unappealing your old jeans feel on a crisp autumn morning? Time for a denim refresh, by way of an attitude-laden skirt. Fashioned from sustainable fabric and finished with sharp contrasting stitching, this soft, tie-waist wonder was made for heeled ankle boots – and we predict you’ll be able to wear it without opaque tights for a few weeks yet. £55, Monsoon

Ginger snap

If – like us – you’ve set aside time to go crunching through fallen autumn leaves this month, you’ll want a cosy wardrobe staple to keep rogue zephyrs at bay. This gorgeous ginger midi was made for such occasions, thanks to its soft, weighty cord and box pleats. Borrow a scruffy dog to make your stomp through the park even more idyllic. £110, Toast

Stylist Loves’ deputy editor Moya finds a timeless autumn shoe for when you don’t fancy boots or trainers

I love a crisp, bright autumn day. I do not love it when it pours with rain from morn till night. But because I live in London, it’s the latter version of autumn that I’m most often treated to. Thanks, Hurricane Lorenzo – love your name, hate your work.

Flimsy shoes are a no-go on soggy days, so unless you want to live in boots for the next five months, you’ll need at least one pair of sturdy flats in your arsenal (especially if, like me, you’re not really a trainer person). G H Bass & Co’s leather loafers (from £90) look excellent with tailored trousers or straight-leg jeans; just add posh socks when the mercury drops.

October’s dress code? Wear it pink. No, it’s not a Mean Girls reference, but the sartorial theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Show your support with the new T-shirt collection from Girl vs Cancer founder (and one of Stylist’s Remarkable Women) Lauren Mahon, whose limited edition #TitTees feature artist Kit Agar’s fine line drawings of bodies affected by breast cancer. A quarter of all proceeds go to charity, too. £32, Girl vs Cancer
