On one of London’s magical wintery terraces. We’re talking fairy lights! Faux sheepskin rugs! Mulled wine! Plus, Dickens-inspired dinners and immersive 1940s fun
Lodge D’Argent

One of the capital’s most extravagant winter terraces has popped up on the roof of swanky French restaurant Coq D’Argent. Book into a mini chalet, snuggle under a blanket and order from the après ski-inspired menu – think sausages and Raclette cheese with potato and ham gratin – washed down with cognac cocktails.

It’s not cheap: booking a lodge requires a minimum spend of £250 on food and drink. But gather a gang of eight, and that works out to just £31.25 each – not bad for an extremely festive night out. Until 29 February. 1 Poultry, EC2R

Pergola

For something bigger and buzzier, head west. The Olympia branch of rooftop bar Pergola has had a wintery makeover, with its wooden columns festooned with evergreen perennials and fairy lights (pictured). Its sister venue in Paddington, meanwhile, has been transformed into a winter forest, which you enter through a tunnel of stars.

As usual, there’s street food (from traders including Mamalan, Temaki Bros and Salt Shed) and a new winter cocktail menu. Booking is essential, but you can go in a group as big or small as you like. Until March. Olympia: Olympia Car Park, Olympia Way, W14. Paddington: 5 Kingdom St, W2

Vinegar Yard

Perfectly positioned if you’re passing through London Bridge, street food venue Vinegar Yard opened just as summer was getting underway – but now, it couldn’t feel cosier. The outdoor area is part-covered by a super-sized, heated tent, under which you can sip hot spiced cider and mulled wine while gazing at the Shard and nibbling on festive burgers.

Inside, meanwhile, has been transformed into a 70s-themed cocktail bar called Abigail’s (inspired by Mike Leigh’s deliciously cringy 1977 play Abigail’s Party). It’s a contrast, but it works. Until 2020. 72-82 St Thomas St, SE1

Rosé on The Roof

On the South Bank is the 1920s cruise liner-inspired hotel Sea Containers. On the top floor of Sea Containers is a bar called 12th Knot. And outside 12th Knot? There’s now a winter terrace inspired by the colours of the arctic twilight.

Overlooking the Thames, the ritzy Rosé on The Roof terrace boasts the mandatory blankets and twinkly lights – plus a menu of Laurent-Perrier champagne cocktails, including the Arctic Spice (whisky, honey, coffee and cuvée) and the Cold Toddy (featuring fig leaf liqueur, yellow chartreuse and spices). It’s posh, and we like it. Until 5 January. 20 Upper Ground, South Bank, SE1

Fever-Tree Winter Lodge

This winter, Broadgate Circle near Liverpool Street has once again been transformed into a winter forest – featuring ‘snow’-topped pine trees, copious fairy lights and live music. The highlight is the Fever-Tree Winter Lodge, a cosy pop-up bar with snug bookable areas and more gin varieties than you can shake a cracker at.

But the rest of the ‘forest’ is well worth checking out, too: there’s a packed calendar of festive quiz nights, whisky tastings and floral workshops by cult florists Grace & Thorn, with proceeds going to mental health charity Mind. Now that’s the real spirit of Christmas. Until 20 December. Broadgate Circle, EC2M

Stylist’s food editor Jenny has a jolly good time at Walthamstow’s newest cocktail bar, The Jellied Eel

Every Friday and Saturday night, once Walthamstow’s L Manze pie and mash shop has closed, it transforms Cinderella-style into a one-of-a-kind cocktail bar called The Jellied Eel. Formerly a pop-up, it proved so popular with East 17 residents that it decided to stay another day (#sorrynotsorry), swapping pies for croquetas and eels for plates of creamy burrata and spicy merguez sausages.

It’s a beaut of a building – Grade II listed with high-backed mahogany booths and art deco tiling – and is run by a group of friends, which comes across in the warm, community vibe. Throw in good tunes, punchy cocktails (try the pisco inferno with a healthy dose of chilli liqueur) and you’ve got the makings of a proper East End knees-up. 76 High St, E17

Four jolly ways to kick off the festive season

We all love the idea of a Charles Dickens Christmas (minus the poverty, illness and ghosts, ofc). The Great Christmas Feast features a lavish meal by chef Neil Rankin and Dickens-themed cocktails, theatre and live music (from £34, until 12 January), while Hello Darling in Southwark is running a special menu inspired by A Christmas Carol (currently on next door at The Old Vic) until 28 January.

Victoriana not your thing? Cahoots’ Ticket Hall & Control Room in Soho has opened in Soho for 1940s-inspired fun. Finally, The Royal Exchange switches on its Christmas lights next Wednesday – with Fortnum & Mason mulled wine, mince pies and carols by the East London Chorus.
