Yes, you can get your make-up in here
No clutches, no annoying wristlets, definitely no minaudières so small they’re basically bangles. Here’s our pick of the best (practical) party bags out there

Hidden depths

There’s something delightfully Mary Poppins-y about a drawstring bag. Pull it closed and it looks neat and tidy; open it up and you can shove a week’s worth of supplies in there. It’s the perfect companion for an evening where you could need any and all of: umbrella, gloves, lipstick, wallet and a snack for the road (we like to be prepared). Even better – it has beads and a tassel! £62.30, Whistles

The bedazzler

There are only two times a sequinned bag really works: a) when you’re nine; b) at Christmas. So it is with delight that we present you this multicoloured joy, which is pleasingly chunky and the colour of a storybook starry night. It will instantly jazz up any outfit – so if you’re reluctant to switch out your jeans and jumper for any occasion, just throw it over your shoulder. Instantly festive. £29.99, Zara

House warmer

Ooh, the conundrums that come with a grown-up house party. Will you be asked to take your shoes off? Can you bring tequila instead of wine? And what do you do with your phone when – god forbid – your dress has no pockets? Slide it into this velveteen delight, that’s what: it’s decorative enough that it’ll look like part of your outfit. PS: here are some socks you can show off, just in case. £35, & Other Stories

Safe bet

Hands up if you also forget to pack a crossbody bag ahead of every. Single. Office. Party? Hi, friends. Avoid the “I CAN’T CARRY AROUND MY BACKPACK ALL NIGHT, SARAH” drama by buying this one ahead of time, and leaving it under your desk until you need it. And as leopard is a neutral, it’ll look just as good with this dress as it will with this skirt. £78, Anthropologie

Got the cream

And now for something a little different. This dreamy creamy bucket bag by Charles & Keith is party on the outside but business in the middle: it’s got a zip-up pouch inside to keep everything safe. And – if you’re more dextrous than us – it has a handle you can sling over your wrist instead of using the strap. Digging the novel design? See also: this majestic number. £65, Charles & Keith

What do you wear under a jumper in this nippy weather? Stylist Loves editor Kat has found the answer

I really do try to learn from my mistakes. But all last winter I found myself sitting in pubs, restaurants and theatres, slowly turning into a human furnace, because under my cosy woollen turtleneck was an old, bobbly, sometimes-see-through vest, and I couldn’t take it off.

So this year, I’m adding some lovely camisoles to my wardrobe – by way of Asos Design. There are loads of patterns and colours (including in the Curve and Petite ranges) to choose from, starting at £15: I like this black version with lace detailing (£16). And the best bit? You can wear them to any festive occasion and when you get too hot – ta-da! – your outfit change is sorted.
