The alternative guide to going out in December
All you want for Christmas is… a weekend without festive crowds. So, sit back, relax, and browse Stylist Loves’ alternative guide to the best events to visit in London this month

The comedy

Laughter is a bona fide way to beat the winter blues, and this month, Soho Theatre have curated a brilliant line-up of funny women. There’s side-splitting standup from Canadian star Mae Martin, a musical show from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Alex Bornstein, potty-mouthed humour from London Hughes and queer sketch comedy from LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary comedy collective The LOL Word. Various dates and times; W1D 3NE

The festival

Any discerning shopper will know the high street is no place to linger at this time of year. Instead, take sanctuary at The London Artisan, where you’ll find a truly one-off selection of handmade jewellery, ceramics, textiles, illustration, homewares, and heaps more from independent designer-makers. Head down to the Old Truman Brewery to browse, chat and shop in the good old-fashioned way. 21-22 December, 11am-6pm; E1 6QR

The Exhibiton

When it comes to museums in London, we’re spoilt for choice. But if you’ve only visited a handful of the major players, then head down to hidden gem The Wallace Collection, where the first UK exhibition of works by Indian master painters commissioned by the East India Company are going on display. Think exotic flowers, lush foliage, and all sorts of beautiful creatures from the animal kingdom. Opens 4 December; £13.50, W1U 3BN

the musical

Romeo & Juliet: the final scene. Juliet picks up a dagger and… gets a life. Yep, the most famous love story of all just got a feel-good feminist remix in the new West End musical & Juliet, which asks: what if our leading lady’s famous ending was really her beginning? If that wasn’t exciting enough, the deliciously camp set pieces feature 90s anthems from the likes of Britney and Backstreet Boys. From £22.50; The Shaftesbury Theatre, WC2H 8DP

The bar

Dona, Stoke Newington’s newest and coolest bar, is the answer to the mulled wine overkill that comes with December. With a small menu of unique Mezcal based cocktails, all named after the women who have inspired the owners, sexy 1920s jazz bar décor and a host of live female performers on the bill every night, it’s a hotspot that won’t stay secret for long. 92 Stoke Newington High Street, N16 7NY
