Graphic manicures aren’t going anywhere in 2020. And now we’ve mastered gradient nails and modern French tips, we’re trying a new twist on the negative space trend: the half and half manicure, as seen in this snap by nail artist Betina Goldstein. 

“Keeping half the nail bare (or painting it a your-nails-but-better shade) and half painted is the best way to embrace bolder styles without fully committing,” says Stylist’s beauty editor Lucy. “Mix things up with clashing patterns or inverted colours – the options are endless.” 

Let’s be honest: pastel green probably isn’t your go-to winter nail colour. Which is precisely what makes it so on-the-money when everyone else is repping a darker palette. 

“Ever since seeing it on make-up artist Harriet Hadfield, I’ve been desperate to try a pale pistachio green on my nails,” says Stylist’s beauty director Shannon. “She used OPI’s This Isn’t Greenland (£10.08, Nail Polish Direct) which is a really chic and creamy green, but J Hannah’s Eames (£20, La Gent) is equally as dreamy – a little bit khaki, a little bit beige. I love it.”

On the hunt for a new go-to nail bar? Ama, the Brixton-based natural salon founded by old friends Ama Quashie and Latoyah Lovatt, uses chic eco-friendly polishes and products. 

New Church House in Manchester, meanwhile, is a historic building that’s been transformed into a super stylish salon (get your nails done whilst sipping on a bespoke cocktail). And if you’re all about the latest trends, Glasgow’s Naf! Salon – which plays plenty of old school classics – is the ultimate place to get creative. 

Diehard gel manicure fans know that peeling your polish is an absolute no-no. But when your nails are looking scruffy between salon visits, Elegant Touch’s nifty Professional Cuticle Pusher and Nail Cleaner (£9.50, Lookfantastic) is a lifesaver. 

“After filing the top of my nails (to break the seal) and soaking them in acetone, I use the rounded edge to lift the polish off, while the pointed end is good for any stubborn parts,” says Lucy. “Works like a charm.”

This year, vegan and cruelty-free nail brands will be more popular than ever.
