Never underestimate the power of a posh lip balm
When it’s bitingly cold, lips are often the first things to suffer. These high-end salves will elevate your mood every time you swipe
Simple pleasures

OK, we’ll level with you. Nobody needs a fancy lip balm, especially since there are so many decent budget options available. But not everything we enjoy is strictly necessary, and there’s something rather gratifying about being able to reach into your tote on a sardine-packed bus and pull out a luxurious tube/pot/stick.

Here are the best balms to add to your kit – starting at just £7.

The glamorous one

With the exception of Mac’s Ruby Woo, Nars’ Orgasm might be the most famous make-up shade in the world. First seen as a cult powder blusher, you can now wear the peachy-pink tone as a highlighter, a nail polish … and this lip balm, which is shimmery, sheer and suits everyone. £23, Asos

The classic one

You can always rely on Kiehl’s for unfussy-yet-indulgent products, and the brand’s Lip Balm #1 – containing squalane, lanolin and almond oil – is exactly that. “It’s excellent, and really helps with the perioral dermatitis I get most winters,” says Stylist’s beauty director Shannon. £10, Kiehl’s

The glowy one

Eve Lom’s name is synonymous with luxurious, effective skincare, and her silky Kiss Mix is no exception. It contains hardworking zinc oxide to help heal chapped lips fast, and leaves behind a beautiful opalescent gleam. Even better, it can also be used on cracked cuticles. £16, Cult Beauty

The all-rounder

If you prefer your salve in a handy stick, reach for Aesop’s Protective Lip Balm, a calming vegan moisturiser with added SPF 30 (double win). Enriched with jojoba and tangerine peel oil, it smells delightfully citrusy – and the pared-back packaging will be eternally stylish. £13, Selfridges

The retro one

Mario Badescu products regularly appear in Instagram’s chicest shelfies, thanks to that distinctive green and white packaging. Get in on the action with this soothing and smoothing balm, formulated with shea butter, sweet almond oil and vitamin E: it also comes in mint and rose-scented versions. From £6.25, Beauty Bay

The tinted one

Rich, nourishing and a little bit decadent, Korres’ silicone-free Lip Butter shares certain traits with actual butter. Dehydrated lips will drink in the blend of shea, rice wax and natural oils – and the tinted shades will brighten up your face on grey days. Our favourite shade is Pomegranate, a sheer-but-saturated pinky red. £11.11, Skinstore

Stylist’s beauty director Shannon recommends a do-it-all cleanser that’s perfect for sensitive skin

As a committed skincare-head, I’m currently celebrating the arrival of Jordan Samuel Skin at Cult Beauty. The US-based range focuses on high-performing ingredients that alleviate the symptoms of irritable skin – and so far, I’m most impressed by The After Show Treatment Cleanser.

The perfect halfway house between an oil and gel cleanser, it has the tenacity to break down make-up and SPF and the freshness needed to make my face feel truly clean. Plus, it’s so nourishing it doesn’t leave me desperate for a thick layer of moisturiser after use. Excellent for temperamental skin, but I’d recommend it even if your complexion is generally calm: it’s that good. £20, Cult Beauty

Smooth skin incoming

What’s the best thing about bedtime? Carving out the time to indulge in your skincare routine. And when it comes to nighttime beauty ingredients, retinol is the one you need to have on your radar. La Roche Posay’s Retinol B3 Serum has all the firming and smoothing properties of retinol but with added ingredients to ease sensitive skin. Glycerin delivers deep hydration to protect your skin’s moisture barrier while Vitamin B3 is all about keeping it plump and supple. That means your skin can still look like it’s had its eight hours, even if you haven’t. Thank goodness for retinol.
