It’s self-gifting time
This season, we’re adorning our fingers with sleek, chunky rings in yellow metal – so treat yourself to one of these today
Do it yourself

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, but we’re sceptical about the wisdom of waiting for a special gift to come your way. Not only are we increasingly turned off by the 14th (research by dating app Happn shows that 70% of Brits now think it’s a waste of money), it’s always risky to expect someone else to pick out exactly what you want.

Think about it: is anyone realistically going to buy you the sculptural gold rings you really want to wear right now? Maybe, but probably not. These chunky beauties were made for self-gifting – invest, wear, and let everyone bask in your glow.

Circle round

NYC-based designer Laura Lombardi’s jewellery is crafted from mostly raw or recycled materials, so we can gild our fingers and be mindful of our fashion footprint. With an engraved border and aged lustre, her 14 carat gold-plated Rosa ring feels like a treasure from a time long ago – wear with all-white to let the gold shine. £38.55 ($50), Laura Lombardi

Artisan brand Ottoman Hands specialises in evocative designs inspired by the beauty of ancient Turkish jewellery. Crafted from 21 carat gold-plated brass, the intricately carved eye on this chunky ring will lend a hint of mysticism to your everyday attire – team with a loose blouse to channel your inner Debbie Harry. £35, Ottoman Hands

Ocean drive

If simple, organic shapes are your thing, Monica Vinader’s Nura collection – inspired by sea-tumbled pebbles, reef fragments and high-polished shells – is a refined way to take on the trend. Offset this statement Nura Teardrop ring (£105) with washed denim – or try the Small Pebble stacking ring for a beautifully understated vibe. £75, Monica Vinader

Heavy metal

Looking to lean all the way into maximalism? By Pariah’s heavy gold jewels, inspired by the undulating landscape of the Caribbean, will satisfy your inner magpie. The hefty Curve ring, cast in solid 18 carat gold vermeil, feels classic and contemporary at the same time – a wear-forever vibe we can get on board with. £160, By Pariah

Modern heirloom

No longer the preserve of aristocrats with family crests, signet rings have had a revival in recent years – and these days, larger, more modern designs are holding court. Seol + Gold’s plain, chunky version comes in both sterling silver and 18 carat yellow gold vermeil – wear with attitude on any finger that takes your fancy. £25.95, Seol + Gold

Ship shape

Matthew’s Calvin’s handcrafted, sculptural jewels nod to his childhood days spent in fishing towns in south Portugal, and his rippled Verde ring is imbued with a sense of natural wonder. Stack alongside other rings (like the rough-luxe De Pera, from £84) or wear solo: it can more than hold its own. £54, Matthew Calvin

The belted blazer is still going strong for 2020, says Stylist’s fashion editor Polly – and Topshop’s version is one of the best

Blazers have always been chic, in a classic sort of way, but they haven’t always been ubiquitous. Less than a decade ago, you’d only wear one regularly if you worked in an extremely corporate job. Now, though, we wear blazers to the pub, to weddings, on nights out; with turtlenecks, T-shirts, jeans, midi skirts and summer dresses. Basically, they’re a sartorial staple.

So how to make a go-to piece feel exciting? Belted blazers began to creep into the shops (and our Instagram feeds) last year, and they still look fresh. Wear this oversized khaki jacket with roomy, slightly cropped trousers and a graphic T-shirt for casual, office-appropriate cool. £75, Topshop
