Don’t give up on press-ups yet - these moves will get you there

It’s easy to get frustrated when you’re struggling to do press-ups – how can a bodyweight move be that hard? But studies show that they require the same amount of muscle as a weighted bench press. So yes, it takes strength, but like bench presses, you can work your way up to mastering this move.

Some people can feel unsure about exercises that rely almost entirely on upper body strength (such as pull-ups and press-ups), but you don’t need Chris Hemsworth-style biceps to do this move. It’s all about strategically working multiple muscles in your arms so that they work together. Train your chest, triceps and shoulders with this upper body routine and you’ll be busting out reps before you know it.

Move over protein shakes – we're keeping cool with this nutritious summer salad

The weather has been hotter than Hades this past week – not complaining – so summer salads are becoming our post-workout meal of choice. If you’re bored of rotating the holy trinity of Caesar, Greek and tuna salads, this fruity-yet-savoury concoction will reignite your love for the refreshing dish.

In this recipe, corn, a slow-digesting grain that’s high in iron, is paired with antioxidant-boosting peaches and peppery, calcium-rich rocket. Perfect for topping up depleted nutrients after exercise, especially when served with a protein like chicken or halloumi. Or simply devour as a quick, delicious lunch while basking in the sunshine.

Fitness trainer and Strong Women ambassador Emma Obayuvana finds a foam roller that’s easily portable

What? Lululemon Double Roller Mini, £38

What is it? A travel-size foam roller that lets you release tension on the go.

The verdict: “If you’re not familiar with a foam roller, you are in for a treat. Rolling out before a workout increases blood flow to the muscles and connective tissue, which not only improves performance, but helps to avoid injuries.  Foam rolling after exercise also reduces soreness and speeds up recovery.

I’ve tried my share of foam rollers which all seem to be pretty effective, but what I like most about this Lululemon roller is that it’s travel-sized. I can easily toss it into my bag since it doesn’t take up much space – perfect whether you’re heading to the gym or park for your workouts.

The two-in-one rollers have different designs and functions: the interior roller is harder and has bigger grooves to get deeper into the muscles (great for relieving back tension) and the exterior roller is meant to massage arms and legs. Although the texture looks harsh, it feels comfortable. I use it both before and after my workouts, and I would recommend the same to my clients.”
