It’s rare that you get the chance to snap up 25 classic works of literature by female authors all for free. But that’s exactly what’s on offer as part of Reclaim Her Name, a new initiative to mark the 25th anniversary of the Women’s Prize For Fiction.
Twenty-five novels by women writers, all of whom originally published their books under male pseudonyms, have now been reissued, with the author’s true name in pride of place on the cover. Why does this matter? Because while some authors prefer to use pen names, women pursuing a career in writing have been faced with sexism and prejudice throughout much of history – prompting many to disguise their identities in order to be taken seriously.
The collection, which includes the likes of Middlemarch by Mary Ann Evans (aka George Eliot) and Ye Game and Playe of Chesse by Alice Dunbar Nelson (aka Monroe Wright) can be downloaded in the form of free ebooks, all featuring beautiful covers by female illustrators from around the world.
