Plant lovers, here are two new ways to immerse yourselves in all things green

If the last six months have exacerbated your obsession with all things green and leafy, open your calendar app now: Noughticulture’s sellout Houseplant Festival at The Garden Museum is back this October. Curated by urban gardener and author Alice Vincent, the three-day event will feature stalls, workshops and talks on everything from the future of flower arranging to the secret language of houseplants (if you’ve been contemplating a career change, there’s even a session on creating a botanical design business). Tickets are limited to allow for a socially distanced experience, so don’t wait to book yours (23-25 October; £5; London, SE1).

And if you’re curious about the benefits of cultivating a happy green space at home, you should also check out Plant Therapy by psychologist and Bloombox Club co-founder Dr Katie Cooper (£16.99, Hardie Grant). The brand new book delves into the fascinating connection between plants and mental wellbeing – as well as exploring the psychology behind the thriving houseplant trend. Essential reading for anyone whose home increasingly resembles the Barbican Conservatory.

Netflix’s new origin story is as gripping as it is chilling, thanks to its stellar cast

Shot in lavish technicolour and threaded with bloodshed from the off, Ratched is a spectacle-laden take on the origin story of Nurse Mildred Ratched, the brutal gatekeeper of the psychiatric ward in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Created by Ryan Murphy, the hardest working man in Hollywood and the brains behind American Horror Story, Pose and Glee, the eight-part series stars the excellent Sarah Paulson (his long-time collaborator) in the titular role. As Mildred she talks her way into a job as a nurse at a mental institution where she begins her nuanced descent into darkness.

Paulson’s talents are matched by a star-studded line-up that includes Cynthia Nixon, Sharon Stone and Sophie Okonedo. “Reviews have been divided, but it’s worth watching for yourself to make up your own mind,” says Stylist’s entertainment director Helen Bownass. “It’s a departure from the bleak and restrained nature of the 1975 Oscar-winning film, but if you’re a fan of Murphy’s singular and sumptuous style, you’ll find to plenty to enjoy.” Ratched is on Netflix now
