Shot in lavish technicolour and threaded with bloodshed from the off, Ratched is a spectacle-laden take on the origin story of Nurse Mildred Ratched, the brutal gatekeeper of the psychiatric ward in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Created by Ryan Murphy, the hardest working man in Hollywood and the brains behind American Horror Story, Pose and Glee, the eight-part series stars the excellent Sarah Paulson (his long-time collaborator) in the titular role. As Mildred she talks her way into a job as a nurse at a mental institution where she begins her nuanced descent into darkness.
Paulson’s talents are matched by a star-studded line-up that includes Cynthia Nixon, Sharon Stone and Sophie Okonedo. “Reviews have been divided, but it’s worth watching for yourself to make up your own mind,” says Stylist’s entertainment director Helen Bownass. “It’s a departure from the bleak and restrained nature of the 1975 Oscar-winning film, but if you’re a fan of Murphy’s singular and sumptuous style, you’ll find to plenty to enjoy.” Ratched is on Netflix now
